These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills, through reading a range of informative and age-appropriate non-fiction texts. The texts include an appropriate mix of topical/ current affairs-type news stories and more uplifting, light-hearted articles:

-The Russia-Ukraine War;
-Climate Change;
-The World’s Oldest Land Animal;
-Alyssa’s Revolutionary Cancer Treatment;
-Sebbie Hall’s Random Acts of Kindness;
-The Increasing World Population.

The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the text is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The PowerPoint presentations guide teachers and students through each of the thought-provoking activities.

The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The texts have been downloaded and reformatted as PDF and Word documents for ease of use, but the link for each original source is also provided on the first slide of the respective PowerPoint presentation.

The sessions are best suited for children across key stage 2 (particularly years 4-6) although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.

Good range of thoughtful, through-provoking tasks (uses VIPERS) and the range and pitch of texts is helpful. Good value.
