Invetigating Number: Place Value. Familiar to anyone who did GCSE / O Level before 1990, the topic of changing base is an enjoyable diversion from the confines of the national curriculum! This powerpoint sets a problem about the number system used by an alien with 8 digits. Ideal as a starter to have on the board, I have used it as a starting point for a range of activities including converting base 10 to base 8, performing calculations in base 8 and simply open my pupils eyes to the wonder of maths! Have also launched into lessons on Binary from this which comes back nicely into index law.

I really like this idea, although the resource itself is very simple, there is just one powerpoint slide with a picture of an alien and the question 'how old are you in alien years'. Clearly this is a worthwhile mathematical problem which would make a really good starter in a general number lesson, you could go deeper with it if you wished and introduce the concept of Binary and other bases to make this into a whole lesson.
