A lesson activity on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Chapter 2 which encourages discussion of the ways in which the writer creates atmosphere.

Pupils fill the gaps in quotations from the text which describe Bruno’s Berlin house and his new house. Answers are supplied in teacher’s notes and going through them could lead to discussion of how the writer conveys the differences in appearance and atmosphere of the two houses.

On A3 paper pupils then draw the two houses side by side, making clear visually the differences between them and adding some of the quotations they completed.
