Toilet pass/out of lesson.Stop students leaving

Want to avoid students asking to leave your lesson? Tip 1: say ‘no’. If ‘no’ is not an option then ask to see their work and tell them how much they need to do before you will consider their request. Tip 2: Get them to sign the front of your Teacher’s Planner to say that they will not ask to leave your lesson in future without written permission from home (see image 2) Tip 3: Make them take a basket (available from Poundland) with them* (see image 1). *Idea from Mr Freeman and copied by me.     Some good ideas here; it can be tricky if you don't know the class. I'm retired, but go back on supply to the old school. There are some genuine cases, but others try to take advantage. I usually say yes if you're desperate, but of course you'll need to make the time up. Follow-up is essential on this one, but of course terribly tiresome! So signing out and back again would make good sense; perhaps totting up time wasted before parents enquire about progress? Some decide they can hang on, a few really need to go. It's often down to not having bothered at playtime. One tactic I found useful with one particular timewaster was to contact Mummy and ask if there was an incontinence problem I hadn't been told about? She confirmed that he had no need for trips out of the classroom, and was furious with her son, not least because she's a teacher herself, and was aware of his backslidings.....

    I like the idea of giving the students something really ridiculous to hold and noticeable to go to the toilet (obviously the humiliation they feel in front of others in the corridor makes an impact). I too feel that my students will probably dump it somewhere sadly. Great idea, I think I need to adapt it for my Year 11 ADHD boys.

    I sign them out ... and back in too! That way we can tell how long they were absent for and narrow down any opportunities to slack off work.

    Good idea, but knowing some of our pupils, the basket won't come back! We have a page in their journals that we sign as well.
