This lesson looks at insect life cycles as part of the National Curriculum topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ for Year 5, before moving on to comparing different animal life cycles. It was originally taught as lesson 5 in the sequence, following learning about bird, mammal and amphibian life cycles (see my other resources for these lessons)

After recapping learning from the previous few lessons, children learn about insects and their life cycles then spot some mistakes in a passage explaining the insect life cycle. This could be done orally or as an exercise in books/on mini whiteboards.

Children then think about what they have learned during the whole topic so far and choose 2-3 different types of animals to compare using Venn diagrams.
