Year 6 RE Unit Part 2 'Does belief in Akhirah help Muslims lead good lives?' based on Discovery

This is a 5 lesson unit that follows up (Part 2) the first unit (Part 1 - which can be purchased separatelt) about Islam and Akhirah for Year 6, based on Discovery education resources.

• Part 1 is ‘How does belief in Akhirah help Muslims lead good lives and how does faith help people with faith deal with matters of life and death?’

This is a challenging unit that encourages Y6 pupils to think for themselves and ponder about belief in a religion and the possibility of after-life, linked to it. It is about the actions and deeds in this life influencing the journey through to the next. It challenges some stereotypes set in the media about ‘jihad’ and the misinterpretation of the meaning of it.

This unit comprises 5 lessons based on the following learning questions:

• Lesson 1: What do different people and groups of people believe they need to do in order to lead a good life?
• Lesson 2: How do some Muslims interpret jihad?
• Lesson 3: What is the difference between lesser and greater jihad?
• Lesson 4: What are the reasons for fighting in the name of jihad?
• Lesson 5: How do I explain how sometimes people see/interpret things in different ways?

*I always plan for 5 lessons to ensure there is a lesson spare in a 6 week unit to explore one further or spend some time coming back to something the children did not fully understand - or to complete tasks. It allows for a lesson to go over two sessions, if required, in greater depth.
