This Reading Comprehension worksheet is suitable for upper intermediate to proficient ESL learners. The text explains breaks down the symptoms, diagnosis and research around autisms. After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including: comprehension questions, True or False exercises and a word search exercise. The vocabulary used in the text is rather advanced and can also be used for IGSCE, TOEFL or IELTS vocabulary building purposes. The handout can be completed in class or assigned for homework.

I developed this unit for a Y2 class of withdrawal LS pupils whom had small group focused English lessons. It includes adapted PPTs specifically with lower language load but they can be adapted up or down. I have also included a few additional resources from other sources .

Question cards, children to clip a clothes peg onto the correct answer (yes or no). Some questions are literal, others require reasoning / knowledge of concepts such as biggest / youngest, prepositions, colours or general knowledge.

I used these as a TEACCH workstation task in my autism classroom to support my learners reading skills and comprehension, together with their reasoning skills. Cards include topics such as facts, pronouns and prepositions. Learners identify yes or no by attaching a clothes peg to the correct answer. Alternatively, if laminated using gloss laminating pouches, they could circle the correct answer with a whiteboard marker.

This simplified story is based on the story of Florence Nightingale. It includes 20 pages and the story has been simplified to be more engaging for students and easier for them to understand and follow the story of Florence Nightingale and everything that she achieved throughout her life. Each mini-page, is half an actual page size, meaning you cut each page in half. I recommend laminating each page individually and then binding together to make a book - it’ll also make it stronger and longer lasting for you. You can use this resource as a whole class story which you can read to your students, or print numerous copies and have them readily available for your students to read in your classroom library. Another great way to use this resource is to introduce the book page by page each day/week and put together as a sequencing activity into student’s literacy books so that you can discuss each page more in-depth and have your students work on their sequencing skills. This resource comes in colour/color or black and white option for your preference. It is also suitable for both UK and US readers i.e colour/color.

This resource is a helpful language activity for students with special needs, autism, or English language learners, because it helps build common everyday vocabulary and language with word picture cards. Students use the picture words to fill in the blanks of the story. Includes flash cards of all the picture words used for practice in fluency. - Greg Smith

This presentation was designed with the following intentions: - to serve as a rough lesson plan - to provide a visual tool for students that aids comprehension - a resource to stimulate class discussion about the book in general and issues such as equality, diversity, tolerance and racism I used it with a Year 10 SEN (Dyslexic) class once a week as part of their Authors' Craft lesson. As these lessons were not meant to be onerous (quite the opposite, they were supposed to encourage reading for pleasure), my group did not do many written comprehension tasks but I believe that the PP is versatile enough so that it can be easily adopted to suit more conventional English lessons as well. To further encourage the love of books in any form, I often allowed students to listen to some sections of the text on Audible. It proved very popular as it took away the anxiety that Dyslexics often associate with lengthy books and having to read out loud.
