I ask students to find 10 nonsense words in the poem.
Use the planning sheet to help them design monster.
Write a description of their monster.
Write a story of poem about their monster using some words they have made up, or made up words from the poem. Here you may need to spend some time deciding what these words mean.
Finally an activity on non-fiction writing to support pupils to include titles, sub-titles, captions and to write in paragraphs. Use the example about Komodo dragons to spot these features. Use the information about Swordfish (easier) and Ichthyosaurus (harder as headings are not included and the information is not in order) or your own research to write your own non-fiction article about a real life monster.
A total of 50 comprehension worksheets (24 differentiated worksheets for 6 nursery rhymes and 36 differentiated comprehension worksheets for photos).
In the 36 photo worksheets:
12 for lower abilities- find, cut and stick from a choice of 4 answers.
12 for middle abilities- find, copy and extend. The start of sentences are modelled and lines are already in place to practise writing on the line.
12 for higher abilities- students should be encouraged to write full sentences independently. Lines are in place for practising writing on the line.
The 6 Nursery Rhymes are: The Grand Old Duke of York, Row Row Row your Boat, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Humpty Dumpty, Itsy-bitsy Spider and Hey Diddle Diddle.
There are 6 storyboards for all students to order events from the rhyme, then 6 worksheets for lower abilities- choosing an answer from a choice of 3 and circle/point/say the correct answer.
6 worksheets for middle abilities- choosing a correct answer from a choice of 3, then copying the answer, practicing handwriting on the lines.
6 worksheets for higher abilities to practice their handwriting, writing in full sentences and using capital letters and full stops.
For extension work- ask students to create their own questions, illustrate a rhyme themselves, recite a rhyme or create and illustrate one of their own.

Say the rhymes with the students, get them to listen and recite each line afterwards, ask them to order the 4 pictures for each nursery rhyme, then use the differentiated worksheets to assess their writing and listening skills.
For the speaking, listening and writing worksheets we ask carers to let us know either during drop off or via email a couple of things their child has done over the weekend. We then ask the students what they did at the weekend, prompting other students to ask questions of their peers, and then do a recap by asking who did what to assess who was listening before getting the children to write either with help or independently what they did at the weekend.

This is a wonderful introductory lesson on students thinking about what makes them unique and wonderful. They use the Collage pictures to create a cubist -style collage and compose a Cinquain Poem that is highly scaffolded to then publish their work. The collage and poem can be pasted onto some coloured A3 paper or card and put on display in your classroom. A fantastic activity that creates truly unique representations of your student’s interests and qualities.
