Download our popular two-week literacy unit of poetry planning for Years 1 and 2. This unit is perfect to go with a living things topic and is built around objectives from the National Curriculum.
In this unit, children will read and listen to nature poems by Christina Rossetti and consider how the sounds and language patterns come alive when the poems are read aloud. Pupils will have the opportunity to create their own versions of the nature poems and to perform them.
The aims of the unit for pupils are:
• To listen to classic poems being read aloud
• To identify patterns of language and recurring phrases
• To use the voice in different ways to express ideas
• To perform a poem off by heart
The PDF file contains 10 full literacy lesson plans, copies of the poems and all accompanying pupil resources. Perfect for National Poetry Month!

Can your students identify the animal the poo came from, what kind of diet the animal might eat, is it a herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore for example. Where does poo come from and how does the digestive system work, does the digestive system of a cow work the same as the digestive system of a human? What can we learn from poo? How can poo be used to fertilise flowers or to grow mushrooms or vegetables in the garden? What happens if farm waste enters the river system? Can it make people sick if a dog poops on the beach?
This resource is a non-fiction comprehension booklet for year 2. It is all about habitats and covers what a habitat is, followed by a short look at deserts, oceans, cities, rainforests, woodlands and seashores.
It is split into 3 differentiated levels. There is a different booklet for each level.
Each booklet contains a title page with helpful words, followed by four pages of pictures with short written extracts to read and 2-3 questions per page.
There are a range of ‘what,’ ‘how,’ ‘which’ and ‘why’ questions, some multiple choice tick questions and some that require more detailed answers. Answers are also included.
I have included colour and black & white versions of each of the 3 levels. The preview pages show the title page and one of the comprehension pages, from the middle ability booklets.
PDF file format.
Plans included; Interdisciplinary plan connected to the Experiences and Outcomes, Topic Lesson Plans, Novel Reading plans and Writing Lesson plans.
Used with a primary 3 class.
Kick off a classification topic with this colourful and engaging PowerPoint presentation. This resource will introduce the 5 vertebrate animal groups to younger pupils - fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
There are 40 slides in total, designed to be used over 1 or several lessons. It ends with a short quiz to re-cap knowledge.
This resource also contains:
Animal sorting activity - 5 cards labeled with each animal group name, plus 24 animal pictures to sort. Print on white card.
Activity booklet - Double-sided sheet (black and white) to print and fold in half. Includes ‘draw the scales on the fish’, ‘identify the reptiles,’ and ‘what do you know about mammals’.
Is this resource editable?
The headings and images in the PowerPoint are not editable. Most of the text boxes
are editable (except on a few slides where I have used clip art that does not allow this).
The activity sheet and sorting activity are not editable.
UK and US paper sizes of the activities are included.
A lesson introduction and activities used with a year 2 class to explore the temperature of different parts of the globe.
Introduces the idea of poles, as well as the Equator. The two different activities both relate to temperature - one asks children to make the varying temperatures on a world map; the other looks at animals in hot and cold environments.
This could link to science and habitats.

Bats use echolocation to find their food.
They send out calls when they're hunting at night and listen to the echoes that come back - they then use this information to &'map&'; their surroundings and work out how far away things are.
Bats can even use echolocation to tell the difference between objects and food - so they can avoid bashing into trees and hone in on a tasty insect instead :O)
Try it out for yourself - play the hungry bats game:
