I have used this lesson twice for interviews and have been offered the job on both occasions! It’s extremely straight forward and everything you need to teach the lesson is contained in the files- the two blank worksheets have lines and the sentence checker for convenience. I uploaded both pdf and word documents for editing. Highly effective, straight forward lesson with a wealth of opportunity for extending children and drawing on year 3 and 4 writing curriculum. If you have any comments about what you liked or what could be improved please let me know.

The Magic Box by Kit Wright Poetry Pack

The imaginative poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Weight provides a wonderful opportunity to appreciate, perform and compose a fantasy poem. These resources are presented beautifully to also evoke an individual written response from the learners. THE LEARNING INTENTIONS INCLUDE: to read, appreciate and perform a fantasy poem to compose verses based on the model poem to include descriptive and imaginative vocabulary within their verses Within the pack: Presentation A which provides an initial starting point to read, appreciate and perform the poem. It leads the learners through each verse and encourages them to appreciate the rich language of the poet. A web link is provided for learners to see and hear the original poet perform the poem. It also provides visuals to help the learners understand and analyse the composition. The initial written task is to compose 3 verses based on the model - learners concentrate on feelings, creatures, the natural world - What would they put in their box? Presentation B provides an opportunity to concentrate on the final 3 verses of the model poem - the ‘impossible things’ verse, what their box is made of and where they will travel in their box. I have provided opportunities for children to work with their talking partners to support their composition. The final result should be very individual poems structured on the original poem. A word mat is also provided to aid composition , a separate copy of the poem for annotation as well as a planning sheet. Within this presentation, there are slides that the teacher can use with interactive pens for shared writing to further support differentiation and an assessment checklist. I have also provided a simple comprehension task which can be used to aid comprehension of the model poem if required. There are many opportunities for incidental learning e.g. grammar and word choice particularly adjectives, powerful verbs, similes and alliteration. Additional tip : Print off nets of cubes and cuboids ( photocopiable card ) and ask children to decorate their magic boxes then assemble them. I hope your learners enjoy the poem and activities and would be delighted if you left feedback. N.B. Ideally these resources should be used over several days

'The Raven' Poetry Planning

Very popular! Download this fun two-week English unit based on 'The Raven' and other poetry by Edgar Allan Poe. In this unit, pupils will read and listen to the dramatic poems 'The Bells' and 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe, and they will consider how the poet uses a range of devices to darken the mood of the poems. Children will work towards creating their own poems with darkened moods and performing them aloud. The aims of the unit for pupils are: • To engage with classic lyric and narrative poems by Edgar Allan Poe • To identify different poetic devices and to explain their effects • To research the literary influences of classic poetry • To prepare and perform a poem to an audience • To identify devices that lighten or darken the mood of a poem The PDF file contains 10 full literacy lesson plans, copies of the poems and all accompanying pupil resources. The lessons are designed for Y5/Y6 but could be adapted to other age groups too. Descriptive Story Poetry (3 week unit) based on the book "A River' by Marc Martin

(1)
This is a 3-week unit of work which focuses upon writing a story poem about salmon on their run up stream where they need to avoid bears and eagles. I always teach this during my Raging Rivers unit as it fits so well in this topic. The text driver is a beautifully drawn book called ‘A River’ by Marc Martin. This unit focuses upon the key features of descriptive poetry such as; metaphors, personification, expanded noun phrases powerful adjectives and vivid language. It also exposes the pupils to a variety of different poets looking at their style and how they have used these key features. The end written piece is an opportunity to generate a great piece of writing as there is a well-structured plan to support your less able pupils. My class love this unit as they are engaged by the story of how brave the salmon are though some of the class always choose to write a poem where their salmon does not make it! I have included all the resources including worksheets, WAGOLL and displays so you can start using this straight away. The learning objectives for this unit are; Stimulate & Generate • To find the meaning of words • To organise paragraphs around a theme • To identify specific techniques, e.g. imagery, metaphor, personification, powerful adjectives and repetition • To read and perform a poem Capture, Sift and Sort • To recognise the key features of descriptive poetry • To use figurative language such as metaphor • To use figurative language such as personification • To retrieve and record information from non-fiction • To use vivid language to describe • To write expanded noun phrases Create, Refine and Evaluate • To plan and organise my ideas to effectively support my writing • To revise, edit evaluate and improve my writing x2 lessons • To perform poetry This unit of work uses the 3-stage planning process of: • Stimulate and Generate • Capture, Sift and Sort • Create, Refine and Evaluate Stimulate and Generate = This usually starts with a hook to interest the class where the class realise who they are going to write for so they have a clear purpose and audience. Activities can include reading excellent model texts, drama or researching more about the author or the content of the book. Capture, Sift and Sort = This is the part of the unit where pupils look at key features, practise skills they will need in order to complete the final piece or new learning for objectives they have not learnt yet. Create, Refine and Evaluate = This is where you bring all you have learnt together and plan the final piece before you write it and then edit it to improve the piece. This can include self, peer or teacher led reviewing.

The Rhythm Of The Rain - Unit of English Writing Planning - inspired by Power of Reading

(0)
This is not an exact copy of the planning from The Power of Reading. It is inspired by the planning - taking some lessons and elements and combining it with my school’s approach to writing. Minimum of 14 lessons but another edit and improve session and publishing sessions can be added onto the end making this 16 potential sessions. Aimed at LKS2, Year 3 and year 4. Key skills taught in this unit: Exploration and teaching of rich vocabulary around water portraying a character’s emotion through verbs and adverbs Inference skills Present perfect tense/ past tense Inverted commas for speech This unit of work involves: Short bursts of writing involving of personal experiences around water which could be a diary entry but gives freedom of choice, poetry, asking key questions. It also involves building up skills for children to write about an event that happens in the forest to the main character where he sees something scary in the bushes, runs away and then realises it was only a small animal such as a bunny or an owl. This gives the children opportunity to show, not tell emotions of fear, nervousness and relief. The next part of the unit of work allows the main character to return home where Isac sees his Mum. This involves a conversation, applying their inverted commas skills. Here he can tell his Mum what happened in the forest and why he was so scared but then felt relieved because it was only an animal. Planning documents attached. Key worksheets attached and differentiated activities attached. Each lesson begins with a grammar warm up.

This is a fun and engaging lesson that children across the age range can access and enjoy.

ENVIRONMENT WHOLE CLASS ASSEMBLY Included in this pack: A short play An original poem (PPT slides and a written version) I’m An Eco-Warrior, Get Me Into There! This is a play for a class of 30 children and is about four environmental issues: forests, rivers, ice caps and oceans. Each issue is represented in a game show by an Eco-Warrior. Each issue has a rap to perform and a group of Fact Finders. The Fact Finders each have a short paragraph of facts to say. Every child has the chance to speak, either with scripted dialogue or through the rap. There are scripted dialogue lines for 22 children and the other children are involved in the raps. You could also add more presenters and share the dialogue out between them. I have included the script as a word document so changes can be made to accommodate more or less speaking parts. Fact Finders can be added to by sharing the dialogue out more, or cut down by giving each Fact Finder more to say. Rappers can also be added to or cut down. One rapper from each environmental issue also has a single line of dialogue. As well as the whole play I have included the Fact Finder scripts and raps separately for ease of chopping them up, so you don’t have to give everyone the full script. Once Upon a Time There Was a Planet… is a 12 stanza non-rhyming poem about the affects we’re having on the environment. It’s presented as a 13 slide power point presentation, with powerful images. There is a written version included too. The poem is ideal for individual, paired, group or whole class work and would make an excellent addition to your class assembly. The first half illustrates how wonderful our planet is and the second half illustrates the devastating affect humans are having on the planet.

Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes Poetry Lessons and Activities

(3)
This is my best selling resource and is a set of lessons and activities for KS2 poetry work. These would also be ideal for use around National Poetry Day or World Poetry Day. The lessons are based on 'Revolting Rhymes' by Roald Dahl. All lesson resources, differentiated activities and planning are provided as part of the pack. I have used this pack for a week of activities linked to Revolting Rhymes, as well as for a one-off lesson on Poetry Day. It could also be used for a set of guided reading activities. The teaching PowerPoint contains some background and introduction, as well as examples for modelling and discussing each independent task. The PowerPoint and the task sheets are provided in Word and pdf format. There are 5 independent activities, so the pack can be used for a whole week or just for 1 or 2 lessons. Focus can also be on one of the Rhymes or on all six, depending on your requirements. The flexibility of the lessons and the entertaining nature of the text means that I have been able to use this pack in Years 4 to 6, but it can also be easily adapted for younger children. Please note: some video links are included in the sessions, which should always be assessed for suitability prior to use! Also, as is well known, Cinderella is called a 'slut' at one point, so be prepared! Includes: *Teacher PowerPoint presentation *5 independent task sheets for support or structure *Challenge tasks are built into the PowerPoint slides *Full planning grid, linked to English curriculum Please see the Goldtopfox shop for more helpful English and general teaching resources: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/goldtopfox
