32 lessons - ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjali Rauf - Year 4/5/6 - English planning A whole term’s English planning linked to the book ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ (Winner of the Blue Peter Best Story Award 2019) by Onjali Rauf. Since its release, this book has been a classroom favourite, covering a topic that is never far from the news. Onjali Rauf writes about the topic of migration and refugees fantastically. I’ve taught this scheme three times now to different classes, and each time the children have all cheered at the end of the book (always a good sign that they’ve enjoyed it!) There are 32 lessons in total, all with accompanying SMART Notebook screens, task sheets and header sheets. To aid teaching each lesson, there are a total of 162 SMART Notebook screens (in one file) and each lesson is clearly marked along with which lesson each chapter should be read to aid and link to the learning. (Update - I personally use SMART Notebook files in my own lessons. In response to many requests, I have converted the SMART Notebook screens to Powerpoint, so there is also a Powerpoint presentation included for the teaching sequence for those unable to use SMART Notebook. However, please note that while the SMART Notebook screens can be edited, the Powerpoint screens can not be edited as they are screen snips from the SMART Notebook file.) These yellow scaffold sheets come in 4 different sizes and make it easier to see work done in pencil.

Here is my most successful unit! Every year, children produce fantastic writing. I have used it in Year 5, but it could be easily adapted for use in any Key Stage 2 class. Although Morpurgo’s version of the classic poem is fantastic, this unit is based on a very short, simplified version of Beowulf (written as a story), which can be read quickly and used as a model for children’s writing. There is still plenty of rich vocabulary and figurative language to explore. I have included two versions of the model: a 500 word version and a more detailed 900 word version. This carefully planned unit is three weeks long. Firtsly, children learn the story through a series of drama activities. Later on in the unit, they change the story, and retell it from the monster’s perspective - great fun! Finally, they create a legend of their own, using the pattern of Beowulf - a ‘defeating the monster’ pattern. Of course, there is plenty of grammar, comprehension and vocabulary work included throughout (all in the ZIP folder). Many sessions and writing tasks (including the final outcome) are differentiated, for mixed ability classes. I have also given suggested passages for whole class shared writing - an essential part of teaching writing. This unit is ready to go. There are 2-3 different levels depending on subject to allow for progression. We had these cards professionally printed at a local printers, double sided with a matt laminate to avoid any reflection of light and I would highly recommend this! If you need to keep costs lower, I would suggest buying some matt laminating pouches. The cards we use across the curriculum. Their use should be modelled and encouraged by staff. Encouarge children to challenge themselves to use a variation of stems to avoid repeating the same starters.

Between the ages of 9 and 12, children have to complete Standardised.Assessment.Tests (Sats). To help them practise for these tests, we have produced a new series of comprehension booklets. The Standards and Testing Agency states that the child has 1 hour to complete the test, answering the questions in the answer booklet. Read one text and answer the questions about that text, before moving onto the next text. There are three texts and three sets of questions in each booklet. The tests in this booklet are based on the KS2 Reading Assessment sample papers. It is important to try and complete them in an hour, but it is your choice. This Assembly has been used to promote reading among pupils. The PowerPoint uses engaging images as prompts to guide pupils through the benefits and importance of reading, the lessons to be learned from famous novels, while also offering pupils the opportunity to discuss their favourite books. I'm using this as a reminder to pupils (and I am embarrassed to say which year they are in!) but I thought it could be useful to others. A ppt for recapping how to use some punctuation in a sentence correctly, looking specifically at questions and statements, capital letters, and apostrophes (with omission only, not possession - that will come in another ppt later).

Starter exercise for warming up and building word knowledge - a good starter for when children come in first thing in the morning or in preparation for entrance exams. 1 exercise = 17 antonyms to be matched (1 used as example). Most words are based on national curriculum (upper KS2) with some others added to enable the sheet to suit children of differing abilities.
