The three Read and Think books encourage poor readers, especially older pupils, to read sentences and simple texts and understand what they read. Book 1 concentrates on short, simple sentences. Book 2 looks at short narrative and informative texts and includes timetables and a calendar. Book 3 deals with short and medium-length narrative and informative texts. In each of the three books, pupils must understand the sentences or texts they read in order to perform the tasks and this ensures text comprehension. The 25 sheets in each book contain a variety of tasks which appeal to a range of pupils, including older, poor readers. Pupils are encouraged to deduce, infer, and interpret information and events. Vocabulary is limited to high-frequency words and the emphasis is on reading: very little writing is required. Previously available through Easylearn.

This is a Power-Point with over 100 slides on Shakespeare's The Tempest. There are resources and activities included within this. It is aimed at low ability KS3 and was made for special needs groups (Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD, predominantly) but easily differentiated. Whilst a text can be read alongside, this unit focuses on very short extracts to help students understand character and theme - whilst making it as accessible as possible to those who struggle. It is recommended students watch the play initially to help develop their visual understanding and then re-watch clips to support what they read. The activities are included and worksheets can be printed as individual slides. This can easily be adapted to challenge students further - and some suggestions are made in the notes section.

I split these into 4 words per week (one week, has 3 words) and we work on spelling these words and using them in sentences, but this can be easily adapted if you wanted to use more words per week. I have included colourful semantics boards, from the basic Who, What doing, What, to more complex Who, What doing, What, Where, Why. I have laminated these for my class and differentiate so some of the students complete only the 3 word sentences and some complete the 4 or 5 word sentences, but using the same pictures. A small version of the visual timetable for your whiteboard or other display with lots of different options for you to choose from. Includes all usual curriculum stuff but also; book talk, SEAL, maths and literacy activities, joke time, news time - all stuff I'm planning on squeezing in. Lunch and break are in different colours to break up the display. I mounted them on another colour and then laminated. They look really effective and don't take up too much room on the board. Hope someone finds them useful as well.

I designed this work sheet for my lower ability year 8 English class when I discovered that they didn't know their own address, how to address an envelope or how to start writing a letter. I followed it with homework - to learn their own address. Then I got students to address & write each other a postcard during one lesson é post it during one half term. They enjoyed bringing in their post to show everyone the following lesson.
