The main focus of this lesson is for students to decide if King Charles II of England deserved the nickname, the ‘Merry Monarch’. Students will be provided with background information about the transition of rule between Oliver Cromwell and Charles II and then be given a set of facts about Charles II’s reign to help them decide if Charles II was more focussed on ‘business’ or ‘pleasure’. Other tasks in this lesson include an activity about the ‘Great Frost Fair’ of 1683. The lesson contains a variety of discussion tasks, warm up start activities, printable resources, and learning reviews as well as engaging background information and challenge questions for higher ability students. There is a choice of printable resources to suit different ages and abilities. The lesson is mainly aimed at KS3 students between the ages of 11-14 but can easily be adapted for younger or older students. A whole unit of 5 lessons covering the National Curriculum objective of the changing power of the monarchy. Lesson 1 - King John I and the Magna Carta. Children will learn what King John I was like as a king, why the Magna Carta was introduced and how it limited the power of the monarch. Lesson 2 - Henry VIII and what he was like as a ruler. Children will learn about his main achievements as king but will also analyse sources to understand more about him as well as bias in sources. Lesson 3 - Queen Mary I and whether she deserved her title of “Bloody Mary.” Children will learn about how she got her title, about her childhood experiences and draw on sources to decide whether she deserved her title or if she was just misunderstood. Lesson 4 - King Charles I and how how he caused the abolishment of the monarchy. Children will analyse sources to make predictions about what he was like as a ruler and what happened to him before completing independent research to find out accurate facts. Opportunities to discuss biased sources throughout. Lesson 5 - the modern monarchy and their power and influence. Children will learn about the current monarchy and how much power and influence they have in modern society. They will then go on to answer the key question of how the power of the monarchy has changed and whether they are still as influential today using all the knowledge they have gained throughout the whole topic.

I adapted each of Samuel Pepys’ original diary entries (plus one of John Evelyn’s) into writing that my students would be able to understand and used them for whole class reading lessons. There is a diary entry plus literal & inference questions for each of the following dates: Sunday 2nd September 1666 Monday 3rd September 1666 Tuesday 4th September 1666 Wednesday 5th September 1666 Thursday 6th September 1666 Please note that although I have adapted the diary entries, they are still somewhat difficult to read because I kept as true to the original as I could. My high attaining Year 2 class was able to understand each of the entries and answer the literal and inference questions but my lower attaining students struggled.
