This 20 minute script was written by an experienced primary school Head of English who is also, outside of school, an award-winning writer. The script was penned for a high ability Year 4 class but is suitable for performance by any year group in KS2 or 3. The script is deliberately humorous, yet is also full of informative and educational learning opportunities about the ancient Maya culture. The script has 30 parts but these could easily be split or doubled up depending on the number of children involved.

This set of resources is designed for teaching the Great Fire of London KS1 History unit. You can download the planning for free here. It is suitable for Year 2 children and more able Year 1 children. The presentation introduces key vocabulary and then takes children through the main events of the Great Fire of London in 1666. The follow-up activity helps children chronologically order these events over the five days of the disaster. It is recommended that children do the sequencing activity in mixed ability pairs. In this lesson, students will be able to describe the various features of Queen Elizabeth’s Religious Settlement and explain why and how Elizabeth I attempted to seek a ‘Middle Way’ between the Catholic and Protestant Churches at the start of her reign in 1558. Students will learn about the changes introduced by the Religious Settlement and why they were so important at the time. Full project booklet to accompany a construction project to make Tudor houses. The comprehensive booklet takes the children through the design process. Projects asks the children to make wooden Tudor houses. We made ours by making the timber frames and then used thin card and paper mache to replicate the wattle and daub, so we made the houses in the same way the Tudors would. The booklet includes a comprehension about Tudor houses. Research pages about models of Tudor houses, 45 and 90 degree corners, joining wood, design brief, concept and final designs, safety, evaluation during and after making and more! Both PDF and Word files (for editing) included.

The PowerPoint is 55 pages long. It covers the history of trains from the first vehicle to be pulled on rails over 200 years ago; steam trains; the locomotive; the Rocket; diesel trains, through to the modern electric trains of today. It is written in the style of a non-fiction book, with a contents page, index and glossary. It would be suitable for upper KS1 or lower KS2 and can be used in a history topic or as a non-fiction book in English.

This Unit of work on Symbolism in Art is suitable for both KS2 and KS3. There is a wealth of information and resources laid out in chronological order – simply decide on how long you wish to spend on each aspect of the topic. During the project we look at: What are Symbols: We look at what symbols are and how they are used in art. Pupils then analyse Holbein’s ‘The Ambassadors’ and investigate the symbols found within the painting. Many fascinating and intriguing stories are hidden within this painting. Unpick the stories by interpreting the symbols. Sketching & Drawing: The children are challenged to invent their own symbols for a number of abstract nouns. Investigating Colour: The children learn that colours can be used as symbols too. Using colours as symbols is introduced through a matching game, then applied to their own symbols. Telling Stories with Symbols: Pupils use symbols and colours to illustrate a story from their own life. Resources: Great PowerPoint packed with dozens of clear, visual information that leads the children through the topic. Print of a set of resources and information sheets for the children – including a small booklet packed with examples of signs and symbols.
