This lesson is part of Understanding Latitude and Longitude, a unit designed for students in upper KS2 and KS3. It can also be taught as a stand-alone lesson.
The presentation introduces the concept of lines of latitude and longitude, including the Equator and Prime Meridian, and goes on to explain their purpose and relationship to Earth’s hemispheres and poles.
In the activity, students have to identify all of these features on diagrams of the Earth. It is differentiated two ways and includes an extension:
Easier – Students have label clues and a vocabulary bank to help them.
Harder – Students have only a vocabulary bank to help them.
Extension – Students fill in the missing words in a text about latitude and longitude.

What does it mean if a file is editable?
Our editable files allow you to change and customize the text so you can make it exactly what you want to fit your classroom. Simply type into the text boxes provided or add in your own to edit. You will need access to Microsoft PowerPoint to do this.
Editable does not mean all parts are moveable. Any included artwork, clip art, some fonts and other graphics are fixed to abide by copyright laws and cannot be edited or removed. Colours also used cannot be edited with the exception of coloured text.

This lesson gives students a chance to consolidate the skills the have learned in the unit so far. The presentation first encourages students to estimate latitude and longitude and then challenges them to work out the coordinates of several capital cities.
The activity can be used as an assessment tool for the unit or done in partners to promote discussion and sharing of ideas. There is also an extension activity.
Activity – Students identify world capital cities using latitude and longitude clues.
Extension – Students locate and label 6 more capital cities on their world map and answer further challenge questions.

Area and perimeter functional skills activity.
2 floor plans are given with requests and costing. Pupils are to calculate the area and perimeter of each room and calculate the cost of tiling, carpeting, installing a fence, skirting etc.
Differentiated activity: the first floor plan has squares to help by counting the boxes. The second floor plan just has measurements.
SEN appropriate with clear bold writing and Comic Sans Font.

This telling the time puzzle is a fun way to test students ability to tell the time. Students match the image of an analogue clock, the time in words, digital and 24-hour time.
Included are variations of the follwing times: o’clock, half past, quarter past and to, 10 minute intervals and minute intervals.
It is designed to be easily cut with little wastage. So either the teacher or tutor can prepare the cards by cutting them before hand, or students can cut their own cards, giving them a chance to see the solutions before they attempt the puzzle.
Although this product is made in colour, it prints perfectly well in black and white.
