They all need to be practised with many different objects to ensure generalisation. Remember to stress first in a row is always on the left. This is critical to the understanding of instructions in maths and other areas. (First in the queue, however, depends on which way the queue is going. It's hard talking maths words!) A set of ClipArt pictures and word cards. The activity is to ask questions in a barrier game and select word cards to match the replies and build sentences. Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. A social story originally inspired by several upsets suffered by a child with social communication problems. Makes a framework for looking at o'clock times and talking about similar irritating events. Clock faces for half-past times provided too, together with alternative events. Lots of ideas included for using the cards. Could be printed 2pp to A4 but cards will be easier to handle if file printed on A4.

A page of pictures with and without labels (also provided as text only) to place according to word function: verbs, nouns or adjectives. They are all words - but what sort of words? Designed using Widgit Communicate Ideas and CIP and illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols.

Print 2-up single-sided on paper. Do cut and stick pairing of cartoon and bubble. 4 sets of 6 per page. Errors can be useful as discussion starters. Extra page of cartoons has empty bubbles to be completed. Could be a useful activity for paired kids with mixed level of reading/writing skills. Also for EAL.

Print single-sided on A4. 12 pictures with 3 sentences to be read out to make a ‘story’ as the child sees the picture. Read twice through and then ask the child to retell the story. Then put the suggested questions. You can also use the text and questions for more able children to read and answer the questions by writing. All answers available from the text.

Grids illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. Grids give practice with vocabulary, reading for meaning, and coordinates. The worksheets include extra questions including fill the blanks which can be completed by copying text or cut-and-paste labels.

Illustrated with Widgit symbols. Three further stories following the same format as before. Text for retelling, straightforward questions and suggestions for inferential questions. Includes mind-map about reading for meaning.
