This activity is a fun way to finish off the term but to keep it topical. Suggested use: in groups, half have to argue the case for an artificial tree and the other half have to argue the case for a real tree. The additional information (about Hazel etc) should help them to understand some of the reasons people make choices (i.e. not always for environmental reasons)

A poem I have written exploring the way we treat our planet and intended to prompt and provoke student debate and discussion. Could easily be used with Primary and Secondary students, as well as even older students as it should act as a stimulus or opening for debate. Thanks Mark Cowan

Note: The postcard contest is a really fun way to learn about all 58 California Counties. Students compete against other classrooms, or work together in their own class community, to receive post cards from all 58 counties. I laminate a large poster of the black and white county map (page 12 of this product). As postcards come in, we read them together, learning about each county's unique and distinguishing features. I then add the postcards to our bulletin board titled, "We (heart) California" and use a colored expo pen to shade the represented county.
I happen to teach at an extremely competitive school where parents, in addition to students, get on board. We post the official start date of the contest, and require that each card or envelope be postmarked and dated from the original county of origin. The winning class earns an ice cream party and bragging rights for the year! :) Even if you're not competitive, it's still a really fun activity when engages all students in learning.
Happy teaching and enjoy!

The Forest Schools concept comes originally from Scandinavia where there has been a long tradition of encouraging young children to play and learn in the outdoors, in ‘Getting Out of the Classroom.
A group of Year 1 children from Charlbury School, Oxfordshire, and their teacher Gill Senior, make one of their regular visits to a local wood. The children have been visiting these woods every fortnight from the moment they started in reception, learning about the environment, how they handle risks and how they use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.
To celebrate Green Schools Revolution Week we’ve produced these activity cards which you can use to bring green issues to life throughout the year. They focus on five themes: Waste, Energy and Science, Fairtrade and Co-operation, Biodiversity, and Healthy Living. So, no matter what your role in school or particular interest, we hope there’ll be something to help inspire your class. They’re packed full of quick and engaging activities which you can use to kick off lessons or extend into one-off activities.
