A PEE Paragraph Writing Mat for KS3/KS4/KS5 students. The Writing Mat allows students to formulate PEE paragraphs while including analytical verbs and adverbs to complement their points and analysis. This mat has been used effectively across a school, not only for English but for other subjects including RE, History and Pastoral lessons. Students derive benefit in securing a consistent PEE paragraph format which they are able to use in any formative or summative assessment.
Includes:
Sentence Starters for ‘Points’
Sentence Starters for ‘Evidence’
Sentence Starters for ‘Analysis’
Analytical Verbs
Analytical Adverbs
Discourse Markers for Extension Tasks
Used for both Key Stages 3 and 4 in English Language. Designed to be printed double sided (PEE on one side, connectives on reverse, same with writing and vocabulary) for students to use during assessment/guided writing. I have them printed in colour on card and laminated for my classroom and it’s a great resource - just grab them if you need, or distribute to individuals who are struggling.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
This is a resource for teachers of KS3 who need a bit of extra help getting pupils to write PEE paragraphs at this level. It deals with the elements of a good PEE paragraph, breaking down what a point is, looking at how to select appropriate evidence and finally how to explore and analyse the quote in detail.
It is based on the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio, but could be adapted to suit another text as necessary.
I have used this format with my KS3 classes and the results have been fantastic!
Designed for Year 7 (but adaptable), the lesson is about introducing students to What/How/Why - or PEE).
Students need to match up 3 PEE burgers and then write their own paragraph.
These grids have been invaluable within our English department, supporting the teaching and revision of Part1: Paper 1 Section A Non-fiction texts in the Edexcel iGCSE anthology. We have seen a vast improvement in the quality of students’ answers since giving them these grids. They identify key techniques and offer in depth analysis linked to the purpose of the text. See my other resources for grids on the other texts from part 1 of the anthology.
A worksheet to guide students’ analysis of the ‘Passage to Africa’ extract by George Alagiah. Aimed at answering q4 of the iGCSE English Language exam. (9-1)
Uses the PQA format offering exemplar points, quotes and analysis. Can be used within lessons or as a revision resource.
Gives learners examples of sentence starters and appropriate language to use for each part of the paragraph or essay. For example, how to introduce evidence or an explanation. There are also suggestions for introduction and conclusion language. It helps learners to add structure to thier longer pieces of writing.
Useful for English as second language learners and can support less confident writers.
It fits on one slide so is easy to display.
In my context, it is useful in History and Geography but could be used in any subject requiring more detailed written responses.
A simple leaflet-style handout to help explain and exemplify how to write PEE paragraphs. Contains starter sentences and vocabulary, as well as a structure and example. There are some blank spaces on the leaflet if you want to add in your school's logo.
Two lessons focusing on the poem 'The Tom-Cat' by Don Marquis focusing on the skill of PEE. Suitable for any KS3 class. First lesson looks at difficult vocabulary and the content of the poem and the second lesson looks at picking out examples and explaining those examples.
A step by step question based approach to supporting students to meet standards required in the AQA mark scheme to write analytical PEE paragraphs, including exemplar writing.
Can be used as an intervention resource or teaching resource.
Clear and minimal Point, Evidence, Explain poster.
Created for guided reading when answering inference and deduction questions.
Also useful for English lessons.
Poster and editable resource included.

Particular focus on selected extracts from the novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar (students do not need to be studying the novel itself). Includes Useful Vocabulary to Explain students’ responses and a sample PEE Paragraph.

A couple of resources that I have created to support teaching PEE paragraphs to KS3 students and low-mid KS4 students.
Resources include a PEE feedback sheet with checklist, PEE pie chart, PEE sentence starters and questions to prompt sentences within paragraphs.
Enjoy!
This guide offers a full English language techniques list with examples and explanations. It allows students to learn how to find the techniques within a piece of text and then how to write in an essay style format. The document is slow paced and very detailed, focusing on one piece of text throughout.
As a teacher I have used this during class or I have given it to pupils to complete before their exams as preparation homework. Students have enjoyed the how colourful and simple the guidebook is. This was my hope when designing and writing it. I hope you will find it a useful source for your students too.
