In this lesson, learners will be able to choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit. They will also be able to compare and order capacity and record the results using >, < and =

The 3 worksheets mostly have blank scales, this will allow you to adapt them for your own class and for differentiation. There is a fourth extra worksheet where children find the thermometer’s heat and increase it to a new temperature, recording the new measurement. The questions include measuring scales with ml, mass and thermometers. Just print out a copy and add the scale by hand, then photocopy it. This is much easier and quicker than editing on a computer! The worksheets have a star at the top right of the page; you can use this for clearer differentiation (you can add stars the harder you make it). I have provided the powerpoint version of the presentation as well in case you want to edit. Fun games are linked in the presentation. A challenge is provided where children make their own scales up with thermometers, which is also the plenary.

• Understand and use the vocabulary related to length, mass and capacity. Compare two lengths, masses or capacities by direct comparison; extend to more than two. Measure using uniform non-standard units (e.g. straws, wooden cubes, plastic weights, yogurt pots), or standard units (e.g. metre sticks, litre jugs).
Shape and space
• Use everyday language to describe features of familiar 3-D and 2-D shapes, including the cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder, cone…, circle, triangle, square, rectangle…, referring to properties such as the shapes of flat faces, or the number of faces or corners… or the number and types of sides.
