This session brings together all the parts of the rainforest creativity theme. From music created with made instruments, dance and the wearing of headdresses to the displaying and showing of pots. Celebrate everything that has been achieved.
Children take their compositions from the previous session and match them to some life cycle words that best describe what they can hear. Then they turn their attention to movement and music, combining them for a performance.
Suitable for years 3 and 4.

UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 03/10/2021
This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of rainforests (or any topic connected to rainforests, Brazil, carnival or celebration).
This ‘Rainforest Animals/Carnival’ SOL allows pupils to discover Brazil in a fun, exciting and an imaginative way. During the first 3 lessons of this scheme of learning, pupils will learn about the animals that live in the Amazon Rainforest, which they will use as a stimulus for choreography. The following 3 lessons focuses on carnival, where pupils will be able to take part in their own carnival parade. At the end of this scheme of learning, pupils will have a performance piece that they can perform in an assembly or for parents.
This SOL comes with:
6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching.
A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson.
A document with the pictures of each of the rainforest animals to be explored. These can be printed and laminated to hand out to groups so that they know which animal they have been assigned to.
A CPD document that should help with aspects of teaching dance that a none dance specialist might find helpful.
Notes:
The timings of the lesson and the activities within the lesson plans can of course be adapted. Activities can be changed, lengthened, shortened, taken out, differentiated etc. Feel free to adapt this resource to suit your own needs as well as the needs of the children.
Feel free to use your own music. I used Rainforest sounds and ‘Beautiful Creatures’ from the Rio 2 soundtrack on YouTube.
I loved teaching this SOL and I hope you do too. If you find it helpful, I would massively appreciate it if you could leave me a review :)
This is a unit of five dance lessons based on the jungle and rainforest. Each lesson is individual and will stand alone, however I would recommend that you do ‘The Machines are Coming’ after doing either ‘Rainforest’ by Helen Cowcher or ‘Rainforest Dance’ so you won’t have to use time going over the same animals.
Lesson 1: 'The Jungle' - group dances based on a poem
Lesson 2: The Machines are Coming - whole class dance based on the diggers coming into the rainforest. Uses the CD 'The Art of Noise' but any music with a mechanical, heavy beat will do
Lesson 3: 'Where the Forest Meets the Sea' by Jeannie Baker - whole class dance telling the story of the book
Lesson 4: Rainforest Dance - upbeat dance using the movements of the rainforest animals. Uses CD 'One World - A Musical Journey Around the Globe' but any upbeat piece of music will do
Lesson 5: 'Rainforest' by Helen Cowcher - whole class dance telling the story of the book.
This pack is accompanied by a power point presentation of the resources used in the lesson ‘The Jungle’. If you don’t have an IWB in the hall, the resources are also included in the lesson pack for you to print out.

A lesson plan and resources for building students' energy and dynamic emphasis in performance. The lesson can be adapted easily - this group looked at the 'Now Nothing' section of 'Still Life at The Penguin Café' (Rainforest People). The lesson includes a match up activity, guess the dynamic game, individual reflection, paired peer assessment and finishes with a simple quiz. Created for GCSE Dance, though could also be adapted for KS3 and lower ability A Level. Choreographer is David Bintley and Company is Birmingham Royal Ballet.
4 dance lesson plans covering themes & ideas linked to the theme - ‘The Americas’.
These cover
Rainforests
New York (grid system & landmarks)
Longitude & Latitude
The Stars & Stripes
These can be delivered in any order.
Each plan enables the teacher to deliver the lesson simply by asking questions & setting creative tasks for the students - this encourages imaginative responses, high levels of engagement, opportunities for students to work together, share ideas, analyse and evaluate.
The lessons are written in a clear formula & include hints & tips along the way as well as the key skill of each section being identified in the right hand column.
This method of working is very inclusive of children with different physical abilities and levels of experience - it also includes an i-Tunes link for suitable music - the tracks suggested would also be available on other platforms such as Spotify or YouTube.
Now its time to get up and moving. Children use ICT to learn basic steps before giving them a go to the music themselves. Maybe you can even invite a local expert in to really get things moving.
