I ran this session with a year 12/13 group who were writing their personal statements. It goes through the steps to writing a great personal statement and helps students to avoid any cliches.
This was a great resource and took a couple of hours. There is a lengthy PowerPoint which goes through a step-by-step guide to the personal statement and a couple of worksheets for students so they can do research on their chosen subjects/universities.
A handy UCAS Booklet for Teachers and Students. Many tasks for students to complete and can be done on UCAS days or over summer. Covers everything from:
What am I doing currently? - This part gets the student to write down what they are subjects they are studying, current target/track grades and expected End of Year grade.
Explains what the options are after 6th form - Using web links from UCAS and a place for students to research what Apprenticeships, Gap Year, Uni, Employment, Internships are and the pros and cons of each. This will ensure students are aware of what each option is and a handy checkbox task for students to see what they would consider.
Career Choices - What careers students may be interested in after 6th form and hand links to see what career type they may fall into. Take it further websites for more info on careers and finding the perfect career related to the subjects they study.
University Choices and Points Calculation - Allow students to work out how many points they have for each subject and how this works.
Different Degree Choices - Allow students to find degrees from the links provided
University Quiz - Rank tables and links regarding the tables. Extra links on how to find the correct university for you.
Space provided for students to research different universities, courses, entry requirements etc. This will help students refer back to when they apply through UCAS.
How to write a personal statement - Planning structure, questions with spaces to write under, a log of extra activities and loads more to support students with this.
Many links are provided to assist students with each step. Each part it broken down so students can fill this in electronically or it can be printed. Ideal for those wanting to set work for the summer as this can be done individually.
Lots of energetic references for all types of students. This could save you a lot of time.
Black/Green = Excellent student
Orange = Average ability
Red = Positive reference for struggling students
Note: I have uploaded a better version, the gender pronouns are underlined so it is easier to edit the statements
Ideal for sixth form or mature students: this model personal statement (with accompanying commentary) is a sure-fire method of helping with an application to go to University. It is structured with sections, annotations and is easily transferable to applying to a degree course of any subject.
Could be used as part of a careers, citizenship or PSHE lesson or as a teaching tool to help structure university applications in colleges and other education providers. It can also be an incredibly useful item to support any individual who is planning to apply to university by themselves.
A UCAS personal statement worksheet to prompt students to consider the course they want to study and how to prove their eligibility on their personal statement.
See my other resource which contains a fab PowerPoint to accompany!
This is a custom size UCAS Timeline for use on display in classrooms. You may well have to send to the printers as it is 26x76 cm but it also looks really great as a pdf and added to any resources. Fully editable - it’s Powerpoint believe it or not and editable just like a Powerpoint. It does look good. Its long and thin and sits nicely next to any whiteboard or door.
In this video from Nottingham Science we hear a warning from Professor Michael Merrifield - admissions tutor for physics and astronomy at the University of Nottingham
Using this method, you will answer twenty one questions. You will be told how many sentences to use for each answer. You will then link and edit them using a simple step-by-step method. The whole process should take no more than 2-3 hours. By the end, you will have a well-polished first draft!
