Weighing up arguments - See saw writing frame

(1)
This resource is a collection of 6 slightly different see-saw balances that can be used with learners to help them develop the skills to weigh up an argument. The idea is that students will list reasons on both side of an argument (e.g. Should we have Nuclear Power?). They then use this to help make a decision. The scoring column on some sheets allows learners to score each argument out of a maximum of say 3. Add the scores on each side to see which has the stronger argument. This also includes phrases to support a more detailed conclusion. This was inspired by 21st Century Science.

There are a wide range of interactive activities , printable resources, differentiation, short video and accompanying task. There is a formal assessment at the end with mark scheme and peer/self review task. There is also an optional creative task for students to do as part of a display.

President Trump: for and against

(1)
There are two lists, one taking a positive view of a Trump action, and the other, a negative take. The students match these up, then describe what the images represent. Finally, they weigh up their own opinions about Trump’s policies. This sheet could be used in a debate about Trump. Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, but hopefully it will encourage them to find out more. Actually, I have put quite a bit of effort into this, so I hope it will be useful!

Apprentice Litter Challenge

(0)
Volunteers all over the world are collecting tonnes of litter that have been left in beauty spots and beaches. This twenty-two slide Powerpoint introduces the problem with reference to Royal Parks, London which in the month of June 2020 collected rubbish that weighed as much as 15 double decker buses. The folder includes an article on the Royal Parks which explains the problem and students analyse the language techniques used. (Answer sheet included). Ideas and prompts are given for creating a fresh campaign to raise awareness of the problem and to persuade people to change their behaviour. Students can work in groups in apprentice-style teams, or the lesson can be adapted for students to work as individuals.

Home learning: the coronavirus and gender

(0)
Is the coronavirus affecting men and women differently? This resource encourages learners to study this question from several angles: from death rates, to the impact of lockdown to numbers on the front line. The activities help learners use evidence to draw their own conclusions and to assess the limits of the available data. Weigh up the evidence on questions like: Is COVID-19 worsening gender inequality? Are women better leaders during a crisis? Does we think hard enough about gender during a pandemic? The reflection activity invites learners to write 100 words about why it’s important to think about gender equality during the current crisis.

*Easily adapted to any history couse* This .pdf includes directions and a rubric for a project requiring students to create a time capsule from a moment, event, or era in history. My students take a Georgia Milestones Assessment then have two weeks of school left, and since we have the pressure of a high-stakes assessment weighing us down all year, I spend quite a bit of time remediating during the year. Once the Milestones Assessment is over, however, I like to provide engaging projects that appeal more to the artistic and tactile students than an interactive notebook might. I typically allow my students to choose a topic from a list of events, included in the directions, and to work in partners.

Brexit: what it is, our options, potential benefits and problems

(0)
With Brexit being a ubiqutous and fairly exhausting topic in the news, I made this to try and teach my KS3 and 4 students about and explore their opinions on it. Mostly, students respond to the first learning question with ‘Brexit means brexit’ which has about as much substance as the middle of a doughnut. Not the jam ones. Learning questions: What is Brexit? What is the EU? What are the different Brexit options? What are the arguments for and against it? Stretch and Challenge: After weighing up both sides of the argument, what is my opinion? Some differentiation included, with a brief summary of the seven main brexit options available. There is also a critical thinking extension which explores a claim that the PM’s deal meets all requirements, which is produced by a thinktank. Students will be shown how to use google power search’s ‘WHO IS’ function to find out who the director of that thinktank is, and how they have conservative leanings, hopefully boosting awareness of bias and independent thought. There are group tasks as well as individual work and opinion line activities included. Also attached here are the ‘four corners’ posters which can be stuck on the four corners of the room so students move to that area depending on their opinion.
