Weighing up arguments - See saw writing frame

(1)
This resource is a collection of 6 slightly different see-saw balances that can be used with learners to help them develop the skills to weigh up an argument. The idea is that students will list reasons on both side of an argument (e.g. Should we have Nuclear Power?). They then use this to help make a decision. The scoring column on some sheets allows learners to score each argument out of a maximum of say 3. Add the scores on each side to see which has the stronger argument. This also includes phrases to support a more detailed conclusion. This was inspired by 21st Century Science.

President Trump: for and against

(1)
There are two lists, one taking a positive view of a Trump action, and the other, a negative take. The students match these up, then describe what the images represent. Finally, they weigh up their own opinions about Trump’s policies. This sheet could be used in a debate about Trump. Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, but hopefully it will encourage them to find out more. Actually, I have put quite a bit of effort into this, so I hope it will be useful!

With an activity section at the end, children have the opportunity to continue the story themselves and giving them the chance to be creative but also talk about their own worries if they want to.

Home learning: the coronavirus and gender

(0)
Is the coronavirus affecting men and women differently? This resource encourages learners to study this question from several angles: from death rates, to the impact of lockdown to numbers on the front line. The activities help learners use evidence to draw their own conclusions and to assess the limits of the available data. Weigh up the evidence on questions like: Is COVID-19 worsening gender inequality? Are women better leaders during a crisis? Does we think hard enough about gender during a pandemic? The reflection activity invites learners to write 100 words about why it’s important to think about gender equality during the current crisis.

Covid 19 - Road Map: Make Friends Safely

(4)
Encourage children to talk about their own personal stories about covid-19. Provide opportunities for children in primary schools to explore different perspectives, talk about any worries and ask questions. Using the ‘Road Map’ approach, children shared their thoughts and views about the issues already widely discussed by politicians, teachers and parents. When we consider the debate around schools on social media, TV and radio from a child’s perspective it is clear that the uncertainty around the safety of returning to school will weigh heavy on their minds. The constant narrative about what’s safe and what isn’t, the confusion about opening schools and mixed messages about PPE will have been heard by all our children, but how they have made sense of it all will be different for each one.

In this video you will see chickens being reared to lay eggs. This is the beginning of the production of chicken for restaurants, shops and supermarkets. Chicken production begins at a rearing farm. The rearing farm produces a healthy flock of birds to lay eggs which will be sent to a hatchery. A range of breeds are reared on the farm. One day old chicks are brought to the farm and are fed a special diet, along with water. The birds are weighed regularly to keep an eye on their health. The birds are also given medicine to protect them from diseases. The health and welfare of the chickens is very important to the farmer. To keep the chickens healthy the workers wear protective clothing, change and clean their boots and clean their hands. The birds and the equipment are checked at least three times a day to make sure the chickens are being kept in good conditions. Suitable for children aged 8-11 years of age.

Jameel Alia Jamil may be a beautiful woman but she wants us to think carefully about that. As a child, born to a Pakistani father and a British Pakistani mother, she faced numerous health issues. As a teenager she had anorexia nervosa (14-17). Aged 17 she had a serious spinal injworldury after being struck by a car. Her recovery from the accident apparently changed her relationship with her body. She is known for her Instagram account 'I weigh’ She realised that she had been conditioned to hate her body by a culture that profits from the self-loathing of young girls. She wants girls to be proud, for us to fell valuable…and look past the flesh on our bones. In 2016 she relocated to the US. She hosts the TBS late-night game show The Misery Index and is a judge on Legendary. Through her willingness to criticise her peers and the structure of the entertainment industry Jameela is a positive and visible role model for millions around the world. GIVE ME STRENGTH KS3/4 - PROGRAMME OVERVIEW The student pack - contains between 19 - 24 worksheets which enable the student to develop skills, log their thoughts and feelings and to form the basis of the discussions. The facilitator pack - accompanies the student pack contains roughly 35 - 40 pages which support the worksheets, suggesting what to discuss, which issues to cover and how to encourage good debate. The intervention - is divided up into 7 sessions, covering different aspects of the programme. AIMS OF THE INTERVENTION This is an intervention aimed at students who suffer from low confidence, anxiety, phobias and are generally lost in their world. It differs from many of the programme because it focuses more on them and how they navigate their world; aiming to establish triggers to their behaviour and addressing them giving the student skills and tools to escape from their negative world. FACILITATOR NOTES These students tend to be unsure of themselves and extremely vulnerable; so managing them through this intervention programme will be a delicate task. They will likely be different sorts of phobia and anxiety etc, but hopefully they will find reassurance and support from their peers and grow in confidence as a result. BASIC OVERVIEW OF THE INTERVENTION SESSIONS 1. How strong am I? - Getting to know you basics, with an emphasis on feelings and emotions. 2. What pushes my buttons? - Seeking out possible negative events and issues which may have influenced the anxiety and phobia. 3. What is my go to response? - Establishing what the ‘normal’ behaviour is and discussing alternatives. 4. What are my triggers? - Looking at what/who may be triggering the situations, feelings and difficulties. 5. How do I want to be? - Continuing the reframing and alternative positive framework for the future. 6. The way forward - Cementing the positives and making plans for future issues. 7. Follow up - General, but ongoing positive focus. SPECIAL NOTE This is an area of need which I believe is growing, in an ever demanding world weighing down upon young people. I believe that all children would benefit from this programme through PHSE maybe, because as stated it isn’t always those who ‘shout the loudest’ who are most in need.

Cassie & Corey is a Drum & Bass Musical Podcast Drama about Eating Disorders for KS 3/4/5. Available on smartphones the drama may prove to be an effective way to stimulate engagement and dialogue – a crucial first step to finding solutions. Eating Disorders often go hand in hand with negative body image, and for young people, negative body image is an open door to anxiety and depression. According to research, early awareness results in swifter treatment and a better long-term outcomes. Funded by ACE and developed in conjunction with the NHS, the 6-part comedy drama acts as a provocation to start young 11-18’s thinking about their relationship with food, and to be aware of some of the signs that indicate distress, and to be given then vocabulary to talk about them. The Only thing that we ask is that if you use the resources, you place a review here, and perhaps if you have the time, you might tell your experience and share the podcast with others.
