Harvest: Harvest Poetry

(5)
Great for harvest festival performances! A one-week literacy unit based on creating and performing harvest poetry about a fieldmouse trying to keep safe when the farmer is harvesting the fields. At the end of the week pupils will have prepared a performance of their harvest poem. The five lessons in this unit give children the opportunity to read and listen to a classic harvest poem and to consider how the sounds and language patterns come alive when it is read aloud, in particular its use of verbs and commands. Children will have the opportunity to engage imaginatively with the poem and to create their own version of a harvest poem to perform aloud. The aims of the unit for pupils are: • To listen to a classic harvest poem being read aloud • To identify verbs • To use command sentences • To prepare a poetry performance including actions • To perform a poem to an audience The final performances would also be perfect for a harvest assembly or harvest festival.

How Intensive Farming is Destroying the Environment - Reading Comprehension Text

(0)
Gaining popularity in the 20th century, boosted by neoliberal policies particularly in countries like the United States, intensive agriculture has been gradually overtaking more traditional farming methods. Intensive agriculture produces much higher yields per unit of land, requiring land modifications such as clearing forests and relying on huge amounts of inputs, which can include things like fertilizers, chemical pesticides and some might say a great deal of cruelty, particularly when it comes to animal operations. This Reading Comprehension / Informational Text explores the money driven practices of Intensive Farming and how they contribute to environmental problems such as deforestation, water pollution and chemical pollution as well as how they normalize extreme animal cruelty. The text also explores possible solutions and alternative to Intensive Farming. This activity is suitable for advanced to proficient ESL learners or native English speakers. After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including: comprehension questions a multiple choice exercise a crossword a fill in the gaps text on “Animal Factory Farms” *a definitions match exercise This can be used as a mini-lesson, assigned for homework or used to for vocabulary building purposes. Total number of pages: 6 Answer key included Tes paid licence

World Food Day

(1)
A great assembly to introduce World Food Day, or to to discuss the issues around food shortages around the world. One of the biggest issues related to climate change is food security. The world’s poorest - many of whom are farmers, fishers and pastorals - are being hit hardest by higher temperatures and an increasing frequency in weather-related disasters. At the same time, the global population is growing steadily and is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050. To meet such a heavy demand, agriculture and food systems will need to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and become more resilient, productive and sustainable. This is the only way that we can ensure the wellbeing of ecosystems and rural populations and reduce emissions.
