Attached are two CPD sessions based around retrieval practice that I used to launch retrieval practice across our school.
The first session discusses the theory of memory, based on the principles outlined in ‘Make Learning Stick’ and ‘Why dont students like school?’, including the forgetting curve, the difference between working memory/ long term memory and cognitive load theory.
The second session discusses the main principles of retrieval practice based on Rosenshine and recent publications. The session also provides a range of examples of different retrieval activities. I have included the templates for these activities for you to share as well.
Both sessions went down extremely well with staff, and helped develop retrieval practice on a whole school level.
The resources could easily be adapted for a departmental level and also sharing with older students.
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.

A PowerPoint complete with interactive tasks and activities to guide teachers to reflect on their use of questioning in the classroom. The CPD session can also be used for practitioners carry out independent CPD.
The PowerPoint draws upon the latest academic research and educational thought to inspire teachers to become more effective in their questioning so that id rives the progress of children.
A series of interactive activities are used throughout to enable staff to consider, discuss, and debate how to design and use questions. Educators learn about the difference between closed and open questioning and why effective questioning is needed in the classroom.
The session also includes true/false statements about what makes good questioning, as well as how to sequence, scaffold, and plan for questions.
The session includes an opportunity to rethink and challenge what they know about questioning, with the opportunity to review an open question of their choice when creating a plan that challenges them to consider the many factors and prerequisites of knowledge and skill needed before posing questions. Such as:
-Where does this question fit in the curriculum and specification?
-What key knowledge is linked to this question?
-What prior learning needs to be recalled to be able to answer this question?
-What abstract concepts students need to understand
-What skills are needed to answer this question?
-What subject specific vocabulary & keywords do pupils need to know and would I expect in answer to this question?
-What possible misconceptions pupils could give to my question?
-What would a top and bottom level answer to my question look like?

A quiz that can be played in teams or individually. Great as an end of term activity. More questions than required for a whole lesson. Many questions have an historical slant but there are also questions on maths, science, music, etc. There are several different style of questions and many of the answers can be worked out through logic and reasoning rather than just knowing the answer or not. Answers appear in the notes section of the powerpoint. The emphasis of the quiz is on fun!
These are a series of dingbats that I have created as engaging starter activities. They work really well as a short punchy starter that students answer on whiteboards before the 4 minute song finishes that students hear as they walk in (e.g. Bon Jovi, Olly Murs). The words are keywords that are referred back to in lesson. There are dingbats for KS3, KS4 and KS5 on these topics: photosynthesis, respiration, compounds, hydrocarbons and carbonyls (A level). Students could post it note their answers with their names and stick them on the whiteboard next to the image. Please leave feedback.
