Hound of the Baskervilles KS3 (4) COMPLETE SoW with 350 slide ppt. and ALL RESOURCES included

(1)
A COMPLETE SCHEME of work on a 350+ slide powerpoint. All resources/worksheets are included and can be printed as single slides from the ppt. Lesson objectives are given (using the Assessment Focuses from the National Curriculum wording, but easily adjusted). Each lesson includes multiple tasks and chapter by chapter questions that allow students to engage with the text (characters, plot, themes, locations, quotations etc.) whilst also considering non-fiction, context, and a range of language devices. Originally made for YEAR 8, this is easily adjusted and differentiation is included (see notes for how to use some slides and alternative methods for higher/lower ability). It has been taught to Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and even at GCSE successfully (both mainstream and Special Needs). The students really loved this unit and it has achieved ‘outstandings’ from observed lessons several times. I’ve also included a digital copy of the text for ease of printing extracts should you want additional ones not in the ppt. (Plus SEN often benefit from a copy of the text that they can draw on or highlight). I hope you enjoy teaching it and that the students gain something from this. Thanks for looking! :)

Similes, introduction. SEN,

I made this resources to introduce similes to a mixed KS1 / KS2 group of students with autism. There is a mindmap used to introduce the idea - think of something which is white. Children used these to complete sentences I wrote on the whiteboard (we were reading The Little Polar Bear). There are 2 worksheets for children - identify a simile from a choice of 4 names pictures. There are a final 2 sheets using a visual mindmap to suggest alternative words for ‘cold’ and ‘worried’. Saved in PDF and in Publisher. Used in primary but also suitable for SEN / KS3.

Prepositions Worksheets

This prepositions resource introduces the basic concept of prepositions to pupils in a fun and engaging way. The resource includes a preposition definition and images to engage the learner. It contains two cloze activities which upon their completion, serve as preposition examples in relation to the pictures. I have used this resource with SEN KS3 pupils; however this is also suitable for KS2 learners and for the purpose of teaching prepositions in English grammar to EAL learners and ESL students. A preposition is a word used before a noun (or pronoun) that tells you where it is in relation to something else. A fun way to extend prepositions for kids after completing this task is to ask pupils to make up their own sentences on the spot using the objects and prepositions they can identify around them. Contains two worksheets.

This program was designed for a multicategorical class in an Australian Support Unit (SEN) in which all of the students were diagnosed with ASD. The program worked on a small group or pair rotational basis and the students thoroughly enjoyed the transition between different Literacy areas of focus. This program would work well in any small group setting in which students are grouped on their areas of strength and areas for improvement.

Positional language: place in line and before / after, teddy themed, KS1, SEN, ASD

(0)
Resources used in my ASD specialist provision class last year, this was a mixed age and ability class who found positional language very difficult to master, even with lots of practical lessons! The pictures used are coloured teddies as we had teddy counters in class. I’ve chosen the colours to match the counter colours so we could use physical teddies for children who needed a more concrete experience. Teddy before / after - 3 A4 sheets. Two of these sheets have a line of teddies at the top, with an arrow to show the direction that they have lined up in. Children need to answer ‘before’ questions (e.g. ‘who is before orange teddy?’) As most of the children had limited literacy skills, I included a strip of teddies at the bottom of the sheet so they could cut and stick instead. This allowed for more independence. The 3rd sheet was an extension for my more able children. Children had to use ‘before’ or ‘after’ correctly in sentences about the teddies. Position Teddy - 5 A4 sheets. Sheet 1: 3 lines of coloured teddies Sheet 2: simple tables Children are given one of the 3 teddy strips which they use to complete the table on sheet 2. Sheet 3: black and white teddy strips to colour Sheet 4 and 5: directions strips Children are given a black and white strip and a sheet of directions (e.g. ‘Red teddy is 1st’ so the child colours the first teddy in their strip red) I chopped and laminated these where appropriate (the teddy strips and instructions) so they were reuseable. They can also be left as they are and glued into books. Together with some practical work, these activities covered maths lessons for over a week. If laminated, they are also good to come back to as one off refreshers, or for 1:1 or intervention work.

Apostrophes aren't hard - made for mid ability SEN but works for all

(0)
This is a step-by-step explanation of how to use apostrophes. I work through it with them putting more examples on the white board and explaining as we go. My Autistic students found that knowing the historical reason for why possessive apostrophes are used helped them see where to put them. Others found the idea of just adding 's worked best for them. It helps if they have a good understanding of plurals generally first. We used this with year 8 all the way through to Sixth Form. Some of our staff even found it useful (we had a few ‘oooh oh I see’ moments!) Worked well with ours for revising for GCSE exams. Made a good starter for revision but I often use for a whole lesson with lots of examples and practising as a group.
