This engaging and stimulating lesson enables students to create travel brochure texts containing appropriate and imaginative language choices, utilising a range of different language techniques with subtlety in order to craft writing that serves the dual purpose of being descriptive and persuasive. This informative and engaging double lesson aims to improve students’ ability to compare and contrast two different texts based on a similar subject. They will focus particularly on the purpose, audience, language, and structure of texts, and will learn to use comparing and contrasting connectives to highlight any similarities and differences. This has always been a crucial skill in English, but has an increased importance in the new GCSE for English Language, as there is a greater requirement for students to be able to make links and comparisons between texts. The students love this idiom activity based on the TV game show ‘Catchphrase.’ The students have to guess the idiom catchphrase and then explain what it means. They have 22 to complete! There is also a fun activity on ten international idioms where the students discuss what they mean.

A comprehensive set of resources for anyone to be able to teach a block on writing discussion texts. Planned for Year 5 but very easily adaptable to Year 4 or Year 6. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that introduce students to the context surrounding Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. We look at ideas about the American Dream, and how the Great Depression impacted on American society after the Roaring Twenties. Additionally, we look at how Steinbeck introduces setting and character at the start of the novel and how these are linked to the idea of the American Dream. Designed for Literature students but easily adaptable for younger ages.

These checklists provides an academic overview of the writing curriculum content to be covered year-by-year from Year 1-6. I provided these to teachers in my own school, who marked the individual elements of the curriculum as they were covered (their aim was to ‘tick’ each element twice over an academic year). They have found it extremely useful, as it offers a useful breakdown of the curriculum statements into the individual components to be taught, which is not always as self-explanatory as one would assume! It is broken down into Composition, Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling, and Handwriting sections. Please note that the spellings listed are indicative of the patterns to be learnt - it is not the exhaustive list. Furthermore, the composition section details our interpretation of what needs to be covered over a year, some schools vary from this. For this reason, the document is provided in Word, for easy editing. It is also provided as a PDF, to prevent formatting issues between computers. Hope that this proves helpful to you too!
