Pupils roll dice and simplify the fractions they get on the grid, with the person with the biggest fraction getting a point. I usually play 10 rounds and then pupils move round and play someone else. They can also discuss at the end whether the game was fair and how to determine whether it was or wasn't. Sometimes if the class is small I record results on the board (like football scores) and get them to draw a up a league table! This is a topic that is quite hard to explain but hopefully this 2 lesson sequence will help. Pupils should already know how to plot linear and quadratic graphs and this builds up to using the graph of one equation to solve a different one. A lesson covering rules for finding interior and exterior angles in polygons. Includes a worksheet with answers and a load of challenge questions from the UKMT papers. In this lesson, student learn how to plot straight line graphs by using a table of values. There is a sheet of questions that they can get straight into without having to draw out axes. In addition, there is a good question about investigating what happens if you switch the x and y values in an equation, which should lead to some nice discussions and discoveries! Single lesson on Prime Decomposition, including worksheet with some different types of pattern to spot, such as powers of decomposed square numbers. Also a simplified explanation of how banks use Prime numbers. There is a link in the plenary that shows (at least for my classroom PC!) that computers find it hard to break down even numbers with 8+ digits, never mind 200!) As with Chris Smith's group challenges, we have also built his Maths relays (https://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/maths-relay-races-problem-solving-puzzles-6064073) into our Y7 scheme of work. They have proven to be very popular with the pupils, and we therefore needed some for Y8 as well - so I made some! The instructions give a few ideas that make these run more smoothly! Each of these documents contains 30 puzzles which I have used over 3 academic years as 'puzzle of the week&'. I have a folder on the wall and pupils help themselves to printouts and they hand them into a box in my room, receiving merits for correct answers. Many of the puzzles are not necessarily my own work, just things I have found over the years! Its worth mentioning that they aren&';t all Maths-based, although most are... Powerpoint and sheet on using Algebra to solve problems relating to the Fibonacci sequence. Pupils learn about plan, front and side elevations and how to draw objects on isometric paper. The worksheet has an investigation into making objects with 5 cubes, as well as some challenging questions on building objects based on their elevations, with as few cubes as possible. Please note that the questions in Section B and the 'impossible shapes to make' are not my own and have been taken from other sheets found online.
