Differentiated 3 ways.

Ancient Egyptian themed. The Nile Stores sells lots of items - prices are differentiated 3 ways. Print out and cut up lots of copies of the medium and spicy numberlines. Children choose mild, medium or spicy and take a copy of the price list and some numberline challenges. At the left, they write the price of the item, at the right they write how much money they have (stated on the challenge card). They then counting up to the number and work out their change by figuring the size of the jumps. Model this carefully. The children really enjoyed this activity and found the new method for working out change accessible.

I show my students a photo of the day (taken from google) linked to our topic which is about going on wellie adventures/being outdoors/nature. There are 3 levels of questioning they work through and discuss with their partners progressing from what can I literally see, to what questions I want to ask and then what can I infer from the picture.

Roll the dice, move that number forward, if you land on 3 tenths, you have to say 7 tenths (make it up to a whole). If you get it wrong, miss a turn next time.

A medium term plan for a 6 week unit of tennis, aimed at year 3. Each week looks at a different focus: reactions, grip, returns, under-arm serves, aim and game application. Differentiation is provided (extending in green, supporting in blue). Designed without reliance on another supporting adult but can easily be adapted to add a supporting adult in with focus groups/assessments. Each lesson has a focus, a warm up, skill development, skill application and assessment section.

Covers national curriculum strands about understanding nutrition and diet. Looks at the different food groups with meal planning activities, making a healthy plate and sorting foods. This was really practical and engaging. We had some deep discussions about food types and the children were confident taking healthy eating beyond 'healthy and unhealthy' into carbohydrates, fats, proteins, sugars etc.

Resources for writing riddle 'What am I?' poetry for sea animals. Includes pictures to mindmap adjectives, cloze procedure for the poem that will have been learnt as a whole class, examples of 'what am I' poetry in different styles written by myself, planning frames for writing their own poem, a brief outline of daily activities for the unit of work, an activity relating to the poem for a child with SEN and some extension questions to reflect on the poem they have written.

Learning to spell homophones is not just about knowing when to use which word, it is about being able to use the letters in the word to help you choose which word it should be. I have made simple, but clear and consistent, posters/help sheets which provide fun ways to help you remember homophones (written in black). For each one I have also given a sentence using that homophone correctly (written in red). 26 Homophones included: all the ones mentioned on Year 3/4 curriculum. Plus a few additional ones e.g. four and for. 6 near homophones included: any from the 3/4 curriculum and others that I found needed teaching due to regional accents e.g. are and our, won and one! Based on Philip Pullman's Aladdin version, a series of 6 lessons looking at different extracts (in chronological order) and answering a series of comprehension questions focusing on clarification, inference, author's choice and providing evidence with answers. The lessons follow a structure (outlined in the document) that encourages more discussion around answers rather than just giving children a text and them answering questions independently. There is a document with suggested answers though you may be surprised some of the things the children come up with for 'what do you think' questions. Clearly structured cards that explain spelling rules including suffixes, prefixes, exceptions and curriculum spellings. Covers a large range of spelling rules such as ed, ing, er/est, y as I, ou as an u, ly, able or ible. Though a comprehensive set, more will come over the year as we cover more rules. They are great to chop up and laminate and have on the tables for children to check and correct their spellings against.
