Every class should know right from the start what you expect from them (Max 3/4) and you need to know what they expect from you. I run this activity with every new group, SEN or not and ensure it is displyed immediately at the front of the class to be constantly referred back to . Enjoy :)

I used this sheet in collaboration with a video demostrating the brains ability to process information and what each part of the brain does. They really enjoyed videos of brain surgery showing different areas being highlighted during the patient talking etc. Enjoy :)

I ALWAYS complete this with a new primary SEN class and they then place their finished sheets on their own part of a noticeboard that is just theirs. They enjoy sharing their basic details and it is very useful for staff as a way in to a positive relationship- which we all know is the key to behaviour management.

I created this when the whole school were spending the day learning about Kenya and I wanted to introduce them to Swahili as the final part of the day was watching the Lion King. They LOVED using the bags to create weird and wonderful sentences that they could try to translate for each other and mix up as they pleased. It does require some prep as each table needs a bag or you could have one big bag with many more words and get student helpers to assist the picking! Please review if you download :)

I used these worksheets with my small SEN BESD group when introducing Ancient Greece. I used a carousel activity for them to gather facts and images for their fact file- which was immediately displayed and we watched a clip about ancient greek soliders and they added the labels (which are still on the word file) and completed the gap/extension tasks. More to come, need to find all the files!

I used this during an introductory lesson about the heart- I used this after we had discussed and completed the parts and function worksheet and watched a short clip demonstrating how the heart moves. This took around 10-15mins with my small SEN group and they enjoy the fast pace and choosing which activities to do to speed up their hearts. Enjoy.

I used this to finish the cryptography topic with SEN students- once they were practised in decoding and used staff members and humour to engage them in the mystery. I cannot stress how much fun the students had and I just watched them scramble around the room decoding and then moving on the the next clue I’d hidden. Easily adaptable to be longer/more difficult. SEN Y6 Science- could be used in Ks3 and Ks1/2 also. I used this during the introductory lesson about the heart and found the combination of firstly labelling togather and then independently filling in the gaps worked really well.

I used this when teaching a BESD YR 6 class to get them interested in ICT. They absolutely loved learning abour cryptography and creating their own code. Some even used it throughout the term to send each other messages! I use this at least once a term with GCSE students to get them to really think deeply about why they are missing marks on exam Qs.

I created this for cover work over two lessons. First the students were asked to mindmap in their books what they already knew about the Amazon and share their ideas. Then video was on (ALWAYS PUT THE SUBS ON) and the teacher wrote any specialist vocab on the white board and then paused regularly to check understanding and bounce ideas around the room. The tasks get more difficult as they go on and if I was running the session, tasks 1 & 2 would be done in the lesson and the third could be set for homework as it is well explained and parent friendly. Designed for a some mixed ability year 8 groups with a vast academic gap and with no prior coasts knowledge. Lots of G+T prompts and SEN friendly scaffolding. Green pen task and a range of activities. The intro worksheets can be found in my shop- which the students engaged well with and enjoyed just going their own thing and then marking/discussing together during the next lesson. I created these slips to encourage a very tricky mixed ability group to reflect upon their classroom behaviour and work. I printed on coloured card and handed them out at the end of term. I then sent a text out to all parents telling them to ask for the slip and to email me if they didn’t receive one. The students appreciated the bespoke feedback and were interested to read each other’s and I could use them to refer back to in future lessons to help them reflect upon their learning.

Usually at the end of term once I have marked an extended piece of work/assessment, I use this to help students reflect on their work and work out which area they need to focus on to improve next term. The students will need lots of assistance and sampling the first time you show them this but once they’ve got it, they enjoy picking out specific targets from the list and then on the first lesson back, I get them to write their target at the stop of the page and keep checking their work against it. Also easy to peer assess future work as students can focus on their peer’s specific target and give richer feedback. Please review if you download! Thanks :)

Title- How does energy consumption affect the landscape? I had already completed the BP oil spill and traditional coal extraction when we completed this lesson. It begins with a GP activity to improve a previous exam Q and builds the Virginia case study through a short clip that I show twice and ends with a contrasting 6 marker. I used this as a two part video lesson that lead to an exam contrasting the impacts. This video really aided engagement with the wider oil and geopolitical issues of the energy module. The students really enjoyed the documentary as it is very engaging and I regularly targeted questions and checked worked and then allowed them to have the sheet with them during the next lesson’s exam q. Used as a joiner lesson between introduction to secondary industry and Nike Sweatshops. The student learn about what Ethical Shopping is and how they as consumers have the power to change industry. They really enjoyed designing their adverts and were very proud when I put them on display. They produced them on computers but some did them on paper, both work as long as it is heavily sampled as many struggle at first with an adverts purpose and layout. The students will have lots of questions and I usually spend 3 lessons on this in total- 1st- introduce term and explain and assess sample ads/start designing. 2nd- Complete design and finish for homework. 3rd- Peer assess each other’s and link it to the environment. They then go on to learn about Nike and their understanding of ethical examples really helped them engage and progress. Please review if you download, thanks :)

Template for the Three Gorges Dam, with extension evaluation task at the bottom and scaffolded tasks. With LA groups, I use a video and pause and demonstrate answers on the board, they usually have a lot of questions about the dam and how they work. Equally, it could be set as homework or for pairs to complete in a computer room and then put on display.

For this lesson I wanted to use student’s work for display so we completed this task on paper and over the whole lesson so students could produce work they were proud of and everyone had an opportunity to contribute to the year 7 display. The LA sheets are to be written on and everyone should complete the superstar extension, which I use as an exit plenary.
