This resource contains an autism awareness activity pack. It is an ideal resource for Autism Awareness Day / Week. The pack contains six activities.
Sensory Sensitivity / Overload
This activity begins with watching a short clip about sensory overload. There are two tasks that follow designed for pupils to experience sensory overload when attempting to complete tasks; one is more challenging than the other.
Autism Discussion Cards
These contain 4 statements about autism designed to provoke discussion and to get the pupils to think about and develop their awareness of autism. They are not true or false statements and there are no right or wrong answers.
Communication Difficulties Exercise
This is a task designed to simulate the difficulties that many people with autism encounter when trying to communicate. Pupils take part in an activity in which they have to think very carefully about the words they use and what they are saying.
What is autism? How Can I Help?
Pupils watch a video about autism in which a young man explains 5 things he thinks people need to know about autism and 5 things people can do to help people with autism. Pupils are asked to discuss the five things that the person felt people needed to know about autism and five ways that people can help. Pupils then complete a worksheet.
Autism Acrostic
Pupils complete an acrostic piece of writing using the word autism as a stimulus. Two acrostic autism posters are included to give the pupils some ideas. An autism acrostic template is also included.

Here are 10 different teamwork-based scenarios which pupils (preferably in teams) can discuss, before teamwork gets underway. Each group is given a specific problem and has to discuss together how they would resolve the situation and encourage the team to work together. They then feedback and we discuss as a class. If I have time and students are keen to add some drama, I’ll ask them to act our their scenario and resolution as a role play.
As a teacher of life-skills, I saw teamwork as a discreet skill-based subject, as well as linking this in throughout other subject areas. These scenarios are based on the situations that just seemed to happen again and again. I find it extremely useful to use something like this BEFORE teamwork begins - things seem to run a lot more smoothly afterwards. Inevitably, you may still have some problems within groups, but you can refer back to these scenarios and how the class chose to solve problems.
I’ve also thrown in a ‘Top Ten Teamwork Tips’ sheet, which students can use alongside this activity and keep in sight to support any partner/group based task.
For strategic advice, ideas, lesson plans related to Inclusive Teamwork - ideas that fit nicely with this discussion-based task, go to https://skillswithfrills.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Published-Optimus-magazine-pull-out-Inclusive-Teamwork.pdf

A small version of the visual timetable for your whiteboard or other display with lots of different options for you to choose from.
Includes all usual curriculum stuff but also; book talk, SEAL, maths and literacy activities, joke time, news time - all stuff I'm planning on squeezing in.
Lunch and break are in different colours to break up the display.
I mounted them on another colour and then laminated. They look really effective and don't take up too much room on the board.
Hope someone finds them useful as well.
This pack includes everything you need to create the perfect visual timetable with 36 different subjects! Please if you need any other subject let me know and I shall add it. Visual timetables are a must in every classroom! I like to use an arrow to move it along the timetable. It really helps the children see whats happening next in the day. Enjoy! Using an excerpt from Roald Dahl's autobiography, 'Boy' - The Great Mouse Plot - a booklet of highly differentiated activities which address skills tested by Qs 1 to 3 of the new AQA Language Paper 2A exam paper, but for students whose reading age is significantly lower than their chronological age.
It's a good way to introduce the focus of each question, and to get students responding in appropriate ways at a level that is appropriate to their ability.
I hope this is useful to you and your students.
Matt :)
