The children used the pictures and longer sentences to shorten their sentences using possessive apostrophes correctly. I found that their accuracy using possessive apostrophes improved massively. There is also a ppt presentation that I used to introduce the concept.

Changing paragraphs when changing topic

(56)
I used this sheet as an introduction to using paragraphs. My children were having difficulty using paragraphs, so this simple activity showed them that one time you change paragraph is when you change topic. I've used a similar type of activity with other subject areas and the children enjoy sorting the sentences into different paragraphs. It is suitable for Year 5, but can be easily altered for other year groups.

Lots of my children were struggling for ideas of characters and settings. So, in order to support them and make their stories more intersting I gave these grids. Some children wanted to challenge themselves so randomly chose a character and setting and wrote a story about them. The results were amusing and interesting.

Column addition crack the code to get the joke

(13)
The children have to work out the answers to the column addition sums. At the bottom of the page is a key, the children match each answer to a letter, and the letters make up the punchline to the joke. It kept the children glued as they were all eager to crack the code and get the joke. My Year 5s loved it, but it could easily be adapted for other year groups.
