Introducing the idea of the data handling cycle...beginning with an illustration of how statistics can be used. Emphasis is on formulating a good hypothesis. 24 examples are given in the word document - for use in pairs or whole class activity if displayed. Some discussion on whether they are good or bad will be needed...can they all be tested? If so, how? Some are questions - how could they be changed to a statement? These can then be referred to again towards the end of the lesson when pupils can be given the sheet to fill in as an example. 2 exam questions are included as a plenary.

I wrote this for my small Foundation GCSE group for Unit 1 Revision and Practice... You will need 1 tube of Smarties (or any other multi coloured sweets - Skittles work quite well too!) per person. The sheets contain all the guidance that a Foundation group would need although I haven't added definitions and formulae since it should be a good chance to review their own notes for help. My intention is to take them into the computer suite as a follow up to show how the graphs, charts and averages can be found on a spreadsheet....

An idea for an end of term activity to get pupils thinking about how numbers are everywhere. Either cut out and mix up for use as a matching activity or cut out and match with the pictures for some displays around the classroom. Not all pictures are here but google images is very useful! I used this resource as an excuse to get a picture of Morten Harket on my wall.....(yes, I'm an 80&'s girl!) Lots more can be added to the resource for displays of numbers everywhere!!

Revision/consolidation activity on area and circumference of circles.

I developed this activity after my top set year 9 class had completed a sheet on 'Body maths&' which involved looking at stride length and speed. You will need a dry day and a big space where you can see footprints. Measurements need to be really accurate. Sheet 2 gives a worksheet to do some distance time calculations from my results if you don&';t do the practical bit yourself. Even if you don't get accurate results the practical activity is good for recognising speed and what m/s actually means in reality - amazing to compare to the stride length of Usain Bolt....

A whole lesson activity working with y=mx+c using Desmos. Students can work through the sheets with opportunities to share their work at various intervals (works well as a remote lesson). If working from home, it gives students a chance to work with another program rather than just using worksheets. I used this with low ability year 11 as well as middle ability year 7 and it worked well with good engagement. I have attached the word version so that you can edit as necessary.
