I like to revise BIG IDEAS for my final revision lesson. This lesson is student led. Students create a mind map 6 BIG IDEAS about Romeo and Juliet using the 3 knowledge organisers to help them form their ideas. Also includes 6 sample exam questions on one A3 sheet for ease of photocopying. The 6 questions are my predictions for what might come up in 2019.

A grade 9 response on the theme of greed in A Christmas Carol. It includes a thesis style introduction. Point 1 explores the Marley’s Ghost section. Point 2 explores the Belle section. Point 3 explores the criminals stealing Scrooge’s possessions in Stave 4. Also presented in the form of 6 revision cards.

Full lesson which pairs 6 quotations from Stave 1 with 6 quotations and Stave 5 and asks students to make inferences looking for similarities and differences to highlight Scrooge’s transformation and redemption. The PowerPoint then goes through 3 inferences for each of the 12 quotations. The lesson also Includes a grade 9 model response and a writing frame for lower ability students. There is also a helpsheet to support an exam question which is also attached. Also includes: A timeline revision activity for A Christmas Carol that asks students to offer 3 layers of analysis for 13 key Scrooge quotations to help track his transformation in the novel from a solitary miser to a redeemed philanthropist. A lesson that revises 16 key quotations each linked to 4 big ideas from the Power and Conflict collection: nature, identity, abuse of power and memory. Students then move on to complete revision on two further concepts linked to war. Also contains ‘because, but, so’ summaries of every poem.

Now we are several years into the new syllabus, I predict they might go for a more obscure extracts. I have been through the text and come up with 6 predictions about extracts that might come up in 2024. Students read each extract and complete the planning grid for each. Ideal to use in a final revision lesson. Also includes a planning resource which offers 3 levels of differentiation to help guide students on how to structure a full length response on the following 4 themes/topics: children, materialism, ghosts, Christmas. Tier 1 difficulty (I do): Big idea, topic sentences and quotations are provided. Students add the analysis of the quotations. Tier 2 difficulty (We do): Students must choose 2 quotations to support each topic sentence and analyse the quotations. Tier 3 difficulty (You do): Students have to generate the big idea, the topic sentences, 2 quotations a paragraph and the quotation analysis.

A lesson revising key themes and quotations for Macbeth and A Christmas Carol. It goes over 6 themes in each text in detail. Students fill in the grid as the teacher goes through the PowerPoint and make notes. It shows that you are ‘in charge’ of your essay and that you know what you think. It can provide a strong foundation for the rest of the essay. Keep referring back to the introduction to create a coherent response.’ AQA examiner’s report 2022 Creating a thesis-style introduction is a challenge for many students but is essential in helping students to reach levels 4-6 in the mark scheme. I have produced a simple 3 point structure to help students quickly generate a thesis statement in timed exam conditions. There is an example of the 3 point structure being used and then students attempt to imitate the structure for 4 other exam-style questions.
