A warning that one SOW is based on swearing and the video used a starter (prompting a disucssion of whether the use of profanity is effective or not and how emotions are expressed through swearing) uses very explicit language. Set of lessons to accompany the study and reading of Stockett’s ‘The Help’. Lessons were aimed at IB English B students but coud easily be used for any classes between the ages of 14 - 18. Note that all lessons are together on one large PPT - there is enough material for approximately 16 lessons. It covers the novel up to chapter 18. When separating year 7 to teach girls about periods, my colleague said, “What shall we do with the boys?” Well, I think we should teach them about periods, too. These two lessons aim to teach boys in a sensitive, informative and (sometimes) humorous way about periods. I created it after I heard about the success of teaching boys in Indonesia about periods and period poverty. It details the basic science behind a period; explains period products; looks at language surrounding periods; plus, we bust myths and facts and participate in activities which prompt adolescent boys to think empathetically about their peers (or sisters, cousins, etc.) who may be going through their period for the first time. The second lesson looks more at the physical (sometimes embarrassing) problems that boys may face when going through puberty. I taught it to year 7 and they really enjoyed it! I hope you do too.

Two lessons to guide students through studying the story “There Will Come Soft Rains” from “Stories Of Ourselves” for examination in 2019.

One (or two, if you like) lessons for KS3 pupils, on how we are all different and the importance of tolerating difference. This lesson prompts students to see diversity as a positive thing. The final task can be extended to the following lesson and take up a whole lesson itself, if you have time in your calendar.

Set of 5 (or more, you could easily stretch these out using debates or writing projects) lessons for the topic of Human Ingenuity for the new English B specification (for examination from 2020). These include social media debates, advertising and a great lesson using an episode of Black Mirror. The Adverts & Taboo lesson last for 2 lessons, easily.

Lesson involving group work for students to develop their understanding of the poem ‘The Planners’ for their English Literature IGCSE exam.

A set of lessons, complete with worksheets, for the prose section of IGCSE English Literature. Lessons are focused on teaching students how to write about symbolism, themes and characters for each story. These slides centre around videos and prompts for discussion of sensitive topics. There is a group project activity at the end. Easily enough for several lessons and the teacher is able to pick and choose which kinds of stereotype they may wish to focus on more, depending on their school and cohort.
