This particular unit of work includes a selection of engaging theory tasks that will enable them to gain new knowledge of the traditional Scone. Learners will have the opportunity to plan, prepare and follow a ‘Fresh Scone’ recipe method. They will finally self-assess their performance, receive feedback from an observer and set targets as part of their overall evaluation. The 8 tasks are set as follows: The history of the Scone - Learners to read out the text to one another, debate on how best to pronounce the word ‘scone’ and then ask and answers questions in a later task. Fill in the missing ingredients using the pictures as a clue and discuss the ingredients used in this particular recipe, i.e. no eggs or the use of lemon juice!. This is also an excellent opportunity to discuss alternative elements for lactose intolerance, vegans etc. Reorganise the jumbled up method into the correct order and attach it to a separate sheet. This could be made easier depending on the level of the learner by cutting two or three of the steps out together. Tutor to cut out the Question Cards and distribute them out to the group. Each learner can then take turns answering and asking questions to one another. Over to you - Practical Element, learners will pair up to follow a method and cook fresh scones using the ingredients mentioned. Self-assessment - A written evaluation, including guided questioning. Any photographs taken during the practical can be attached as additional evidence. This task requires learners to recognise the hazards and dangers relevant to working in a Painting and Decorating environment and know how to minimise any risks of injury or illness to yourself and others. One of the difficulties that students encounter when faced with a writing task in English is how to get started and then cohesively develop that thought. I find that many of them, especially younger students, rebel at the idea of rigorous planning and drafting, just wanting to get it down. Others face a barrier of fear. I came across the idea of using the Fibonacci sequence for extended and creative writing by accident when searching an online thesaurus. I immediately saw the sense in it and decided to apply it in the classroom. It worked. It solved the problem. There was now a way to plan, draft, develop and craft in small pieces that led to a satisfying cohesive whole. Some were amazed at just how much they could write and how they could creatively extend their writing in terms of thought provoking discussion. In lower ability classes it provided an element of fun and removed the daunting prospect of extended writing with higher word counts. In the higher ability groups it opened up the channel for students comfortably working at grade ‘C’ to move out of that comfort zone and stretch upwards towards the A* that so many of them had the potential to reach. When I analysed the results I found that two things contributed to the success. 1. The fact that a piece of extended writing is built step at a time through developing levels of skill. This encouraged confidence. 2. The framework encouraged the skill of planning, drafting, and editing. Choosing the right words and the most effective order of words, within a gradually increasing number of words, developed vocabulary, sentence structure, and lifted the content away from basic repetition of facts. Students had the confidence to ‘craft’ their writing. The resource that follows uses an example in which the students can engage collaboratively. There is then an individual assignment for them to complete using the sequence. As it stands it fits criteria suited to the ‘gifted and talented’ of Key Stage 3, and will be of value in Key Stage 4 to move those ‘C’ grade learners out of their comfort zone and stretch them upwards. However, it can be adapted quite easily for students of lower ability. Post 16 students who achieved low grade GCSE and need to either re-sit or complete Functional Skills English at level 2 will also find this pattern helps build their skills. The resource has been designed in a workbook format. However, it doesn’t have to be used that way. It can be copied and pasted onto a presentation for whole class collaborative discussion and writing projects. Each page has been formatted so that it stands alone and therefore can be photocopied separately and used at appropriate times in the lesson (s). This 5th series of flashcards focuses on the characterisation of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. There are ‘quotes’ to explore cards for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth who are the lead characters of the play. The final card summarises how the other characters interact. These cards are valuable aids to helping students answer the part of the question where they are asked to relate their analysis of the given quote to other areas of the play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are central. Act 1 introduces them both very forcefully, and then as the plot develops their characters evolve in opposite directions almost a reversal. Task 1 requires learners to decide on how much of their winnings they would gift, if any, to a charity and/or family and friends. This offers an effective platform for discussion around charities, generosity and their individual value of money. Task two requires the learner to select from a list of items and how they would spend the remaining money. They will write reasons for their choices and share with the rest of the group, which is a great opportunity for speaking and listening and finding common interests within the group. Task Three asks the learners to complete a shopping list and to include costs and keep a running total of their remaining balance. The final objective is to get as close to spending 1,000,000 as possible. Calculator use is down to the discretion of the Tutor and the ability of learners. WHATS ON THE BOX Learners will work with a Fictional TV guide. They will study the schedule and then attempt to answer a series of questions related to the information shown. They will then take part in a discussion based on their own favourite TV programme choices. They will create their own Perfect TV schedule, produce questions related to this new timetable and then test their peers. SMARTIES INVESTIGATION Learner focus on investigating number and frequency using a tube of Smarties. Their task is to gather data and produce a bar chart showing their findings. Learners will then take part in a speaking and listening task that requires them to extract data from other groups allowing them to be able to produce a second chart and accurately present this collective data. World Records This first resourse focuses on ‘Records set around the World’. Learners are tasked with estimating various measurements from the tallest to the heaviest, longest to shortest etc. They are then challenged to convert those amounts to an alternative form of measurement i.e. litre to pints, miles to Kilometres etc Time for a Holiday The second resouces starts with a warm up activity and tests the learner’s knowledge of Seaside towns in the UK and their locations. Great task to use on a SMART Board or in separate groups on A3 paper. It then requires them to study a series of weather graphes and answer questions to confirm they are able to read and extract the correct information. The final task involves budgeting a holiday to Newquay using a fictional scenario and an allowance of £650. Possible Extension Tasks Task 1 - Ask learners to find the location of other towns and activities. Task 2 - Extend questions to work out the Mean, Mode and Median. Task 3 - Limit Budget or change the scenario to make it more challenging. Reading Timetables This 3rd resource focuses on ‘Reading Timetables’. Learners are tasked with studying 3 examples, a Bus Timetable, a Swimming Pool Timetable and a College Session Timetable and then extracting the information required to answer the set questions and confirm understanding. The questions can be answered individually or collectively by cutting them into cards. The larger A3 versions (included) can be displayed and the group can carousel around the room. Alternatively, the questions could be called out by the tutor for a more active learning experience. Lots of scope for interpretation, the resources also included some blank question sheets so learners can create some peer to peer questioning. This Flashcards Bundle evidences ways in which Shakespeare has highlighted Macbeth as a Tragic Hero (set 1), used the supernatural to develop characters (set 2) and intorduce the theme of guilt and anxiety in the play. (Set 3) Set 1 - The quotes, one from each act evidence ways in which Shakespeare has used the supernatural to develop characters and also to move forward the plot. However, each quote also has relevance to other themes. Set 2 - The quotes, one from each act, evidence ways in which Shakespeare has highlighted Macbeth as a tragic hero. A tragedy play in Shakespeare’s time begins with qualities in a hero that are admired. The hero is loved and there is an element of celebrity and role model. Then a weakness is highlighted and manipulated to bring down the hero with tragic consequences. Set 3 - The quotes, one from each act, evidence ways in which Shakespeare has highlighted the theme of guilt and anxiety in the play. It is interesting in Macbeth that Macbeth as a military general had no difficulty in applying violent acts to kill his enemy but could not handle emotionally or mentally the murder of King Duncan. This brings into play questions of right and wrong and integrity and honour.
