Schools, alongside parents, have a vital role in preparing children and young people to negotiate the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly complex world. Personal Development deals with real-life issues affecting our children, families and communities. It relates to the social, health and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes including relationships. It supports students to be healthy (mentally and physically), safe (on and off line) and equip them to thrive in their relationships and careers. Therefore, it essential that you map out the Personal Development curriculum so that it can provide all children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse community. Children should be encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. The Personal Development Curriculum is integral to the development of children’s values in order for them to become positive citizens in an ever-changing community. This Personal Development Plan is broken down into categories across each term, including British Values, Curriculum and Resources and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC), so that you can assess the quality of the provision your setting provides. This resource is useful for teachers and senior leaders. This may also be a good tool to use with a link governor or the wider governing body. This plan covers all aspects of personal development as outlined in the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF). The importance of speaking and listening is often forgotten about, yet is an essential life skill. Therefore, it is crucial to inspire, motivate and give children opportunities to speak in public. An enaging assessment tool that allows children to peer and self assess their performances: great for debating and performance poetry sessions. Statements on how to engage an audience as well as improve dictation and tone are split across year groups to ensure that they are progressive across each year group. Here is a unit of work for a whole term that includes a range of writing types: Formal Letter to the Government (writing for a purpose extremely evident and children thrive off of this). Setting Description - Air Raid War Poems Informal Letter as an evacuee Biography Flashback Story It includes 6 Active Inspire flipcharts and the PDF versions for each text type, learning journeys, models of excellence and resources. Each lesson in the week also has star questions attached to extend children further or alternatively give opportunity for post-teach time in the following session. The work focuses on the history of war and looks in depth at a range of events/people, including Walter Tull and Operation Mincemeat. There is also a week unit which focuses on the Literacy Shed Video ‘The Piano’. It includes a range of videos and history to engage all children. There are many opportunites for paired, individual and group work. The range of models of excellence allows children to have the opportunity to magpie new vocabulary, whilst developing their writing and editing techniques. This sequence of lesson includes a learning journey, powerpoint, resources and models of excellence. Five essential resources for improving your own and your school’s behaviour management: 1) Behaviour Rota - Make sure it is clear which member of SLT is on duty for reflection time. This will reduce the anxiety of teachers and pupils as they will know exactly what room to go to and who will be working with them. 2) Behaviour Tracker - For SLT to log behaviour concerns of children who have been in missed play 3x. Keep track of those children who are regularly attending so that you can put in place a behaviour strategy form and involve the parents. 3) Reflection Time Slips - For teachers to give their children to take to reflection time. This will allow the SLT member to clearly identify what happened - think about how many children have ever said to you, “I’m not sure what I’ve done.” This will certainly prevent this happening! 4) Reflection Time Response - Remember: children aren’t sent to reflection time to be told off but to discuss and reflect on their actions when they are calm and ready to explain. There is usually a reason children will act out, so this is the time where they can express their own needs and reflect on what went wrong. 5) ABC chart - Keep track of children who display behaviour issues, can you spot any recurring triggers? You will often find there is a specific time or lesson that triggers specific responses. This Wave 1 Strategy Tracker is to support your children who display SEND needs. It needs to be updated by the teacher to see what works for each child with an additional need. This tracker can be used to support teachers in using strategies for a range of needs, including: ASD, dyslexia, ADD and ADHD. It can also be used alongside applying for an EHCP, evidence for IEPs and as support for parents to give them reassurance in what is in place in school. As a supporting document, I have also attached a plan, do, review template to track each intervention that has been put into place. Teachers should choose a few strategies from this form and review at regular intervals. If the child is not responding positively, then they will need to move to Wave 2 strategies.

Michelle Gaugy sums it up pretty nicely by saying: Every work of art has two primary elements: technical skill and creative imagination, which can be thought of as graph lines that meet somewhere.
