A Powerpoint to support the sketching of ‘winter trees.’
I made this for a year 3/4 class to show them examples of winter trees (with no leaves) for discussion before going outside and sketching real life trees.
In addition there are some images I used as a print out for the children to discuss and refer to, these may help teachers with the demonstration of the technique too.
I have also included an additional Powerpoint I have made with non-commercial pictures of winter trees to show children.

A bumper set of resources initially used in the Year 4 topic of:
Creating Images with Poetry, Similes and Metaphors.
Due to the popularity of this resource I have included a Powerpoint I used for a very successful ‘Outstanding’ observation lesson by Ofsted involving describing a beach setting with similes and metaphors.
I recently adapted this in this for a year 6 class I taught and we produced some fantastic work.
There is also quite a few poems I have written using Similes and Metaphors in them to create images and a few more resources too including a soothing soundtrack and background to play on your IW on loop.
LO: Understand how writers portray character personality through writing.
This is a lesson based on exploring the techniques a writer uses to show a characters personality and requires pupils to use the evidence from the text extract I have included from the book 'The Hobbit' it is an excellent extract featuring the character 'Gollum.' The Powerpoint I have made goes through the process of...
S (speech)
A (actions)
D (description)
Children can then annotate their text accordingly and / or draw the character with annotations. Highly adaptable for many ages.
The 1970's version of the hobbit features a similar conversation on YouTube.
BONUS
I have included a snippet of the text from 'The Hobbit' an activity for children to highlight all the parts of the text that describe the hobbit / wizard and the house. They then draw a picture to match their highlights. The results can be compared to the artists impression I have included.
I couldn’t find any materials on this when I needed to teach my year 3 class what the equals sign REALLY meant.
I have included the lesson plan I used, the 3 differentiated worksheets and a Powerpoint I made.
Also have included a homework set of resource sheets (could alternatively be used in class as a reinforcement at a later date.)
UPDATE: I have added a more challenging resource for year 3/4
UPDATE NOV: added Dahl resources.
A unit of work and worksheets I made for children to analyse and produce an 'Oompa Loompa' song based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
This also has drama / dance links!
A truly unique lesson idea you won't find anywhere.
Please note these are resources to write lyrics to a tune plus lots of other extras, mostly Literacy based. I have now included the backing track (Karaoke version to the original tune.)
UPDATE: I have added a collection of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory resources (including the first 3 book chapters and questions based on this) and additional files for the Oompa Loompa song resource
The perfect start to a ‘Marvel’ themed quiz!
There are 14 questions in total in this picture round:
The first 4 questions require identification of the Marvel character from their sillouette
The next 4 questions participants should name the Marvel actor . actress
The final 6 questions are scenes from Marvel movies in which quizzers should identify the film the still is from (you may want to add a multiple choice element to this section of the round, these are included in the answers if you wish to share them with your quizzers.)
Lesson Plans for teaching the area of Calligrams / Shape poetry. Ideal for year 3/4.
I have also included a set of resources for use in the genre.
Reduced price.
A set of differentiated worksheets I made where children have to add the two numbers below to get the final brick of the top of the pyramid.
The harder worksheets require inverse operations. Fantastic for an activity relating to how additional and subtraction are linked, or reinforcing the concept.
Completely ORIGINAL and works fantastically. Developed in collaboration with an esteemed colleague.
These are some of the resources I used and created when the children were doing fantasy stories, we linked it to the Thundercat cartoon, did character descriptions and settings. I always do this topic with the children in year 3/4, the short episodes of the series all offer a clear beginning, middle and end which lends itself very well to some excellent short stories by the children. The ‘cave of time’ is an especially good episode with a clear problem, build up and solution etc
Included a weekly plan and a map that can be printed over 2 pieces of paper for display.
I have also included a set of Top Trump example attributes for this resource which really gets the boys extremely motivated and could be used as an additional activity to be played later on in Golden Time.
This is very comprehensive and I have used this many times successfully with years 3-5.
The boys especially don’t stop talking about it!
Indiana Jones - Adventure, survival stories - Implementing genre features - Internal dialogue - Could alternatively be used as a stimulus for a ‘big write.’
I found very little in terms of creative content in this area so made my own creative lesson up. (Delivered to a year 5/6 class of 30 children.)
RESOURCE FEATURES…
Lesson Plan (used in an observation lesson.)
PowerPoint - Including embedded video clips, starter to the lesson and details of activity.
Worksheet for starter asking the children to name the genre from a general description. (Answers on PowerPoint.)
Separate video clip for lesson
All you need for a creative literacy lesson with the following objectives and success criteria.
Learning Objective: To know and understand the features of survival / adventure stories
Success criteria:
• Powerful verbs
• Dialogue and internal voice (the PowerPoint / clips are especially useful for this concept.)
• Description to create excitement
Children are then asked to produce a piece of creative writing (as set out in the lesson plan / PowerPoint) with the film clip as a stimulus.
A traditional ‘Spot the Ball’ picture round activity ideal for form time or as a time filler / end of term fun activity.
England players, old and new, a lot of these are from the 1966 football World Cup! Players have to guess (multiple choice) which location the ball was in.
