This exciting project is a new slant on the traditional 'identity' project used in many school art departments, except this version does not depend on the ability to draw a self portrait, but rather uses found objects and symbolism to create deep, meaningful pieces of art. What's more, the project embeds cross-curricular learning, integrating Religious Education themes on identity with Mathematics of Net Making and construction of 3D shapes. The download contains a full Scheme of Work and four PowerPoint presentations as well as photocopiable NET templates, artist links and student examples to help you. This was one of my favourite projects as a teacher!

Advanced Stage drawing has been designed for students approx 13-16 years or those who would assess their current ability as: “I’m quite good at drawing, I draw often, but I want to improve so that I can draw and shade difficult things.” At this level of drawing you are challenged to construct, measure, shade and draw a more complex group of objects, rendering shading and detail with greater accuracy and precision. A comprehensive introduction for those who are at the very beginning stage of drawing and would assess their current ability as: 'I can't even draw a stick man!' Learn about the fabulous birds of New Guinea and how they have evolved into some of the most stunning creatures on the planet. Teach sketchbook recording techniques, art methods and my own technique of making birds using PVA glue. This is a lovely craft project for younger art students and is such a huge topic, it can easily be developed into a cross-curricular theme with science, geography and maths. One for younger children.

Complete with beautiful supporting illustrations, a teaching Powerpoint a detailed Lesson Plan with full instructions, fish illustrations and a cross-hatching animation, this 4-6 hour project teaches students to illustrate fish in detail using cross-hatching pen and ink techniques, before inventing their own weird and crazy fish to draw, design and make in a variety of ways. The tutorials show you methods of making fish in clay, wire or 3D. Great for Primary or key stage 3 year 7 to 8.

For those who would assess their current ability as: “I can draw the basics ok, such as drawing outlines of shapes, but I need help with some areas such as how to shade etc.” Here I show you how to combine geometry, measuring and shading skills from the first two stages into observational drawing of simple still life shapes. Intermediate Stage is for more advanced Primary Middle school students or Secondary Junior High to develop into observational drawing. Famous Western Artists Primary K-6 pupils should know. By this I mean that they should have seen images by these artists and remember key details about when and where they lived. These artists could support work done in other subject areas. All dates are approximate. It is not suggested that Primary K-6 students should know every artist on this list, but rather that they should know and understand the main movements and how art has changed. There is a great activity I have written that does this called my art timeline game which is available to download free from my website. There are also too many brilliant artists not mentioned here that I have omitted to keep things simple. By the time we get to Contemporary art you can pretty much choose what you like! The resource contains a link to all the images you need via Google Art Institute. ​

I designed this scheme of work nearly ten years ago and it is still as interesting and exciting now as it was then. It combines brilliantly with science lessons about life on other planets. It teaches young people how to design within design constraints, use their imagination and think about how different life evolves. Use it with my Alien Landscape project to get the full effect.

Four drawing lesson plan activities for you to use in your classroom that have stood the test of time as classic drawing exercises. Blind contour and hand blind drawing teach your students to look at what they are drawing not the paper, describing drawing teaches visual and oral literacy, whilst object in a bag teaches imaginative recall.

This is a great drawing lesson that really extends your students' understanding of drawing and helps them take their first steps into abstraction and expression. You might need to adapt it to suit the literacy level of your pupils, but it is suitable for Key Stage 2 or 3, in fact I've seen it adapted for KS1.
