This is a 2 week and 3 day unit of work (can be extended to 3 wks if needed) on WW1. It is aimed at Y6, however is suitable for KS3 due to poems used (Wilfred Owen). It includes 3 PowerPoints for each week, plus all resources needed for the lessons.

This includes 3 weeks planning on historical diaries and all resources, including Activinspire flipcharts for each lesson. It is based on the stunning novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman about WW2 and a child fleeing to find his parents. Many resources refer to My Secret War Diary, which is excellent for using extracts. This was aimed at my Y6 class, however can be used with Y5 or Y7+ if needed. The work produced by my class was stunning and the children fell in love with the novel.

Three weeks of planning (4 days a week as 1 day was taken with drama activities) - based on the novel 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. Used in Y6, however can be adapted for Y5 or Y7

A knowledge organiser based on the novel ‘Garbage King’ by Elizabeth to support children when writing a poem about ‘homeless children’, when studying the novel at a deeper level. It includes key vocabulary, grammar requirements, suggested composition, sentence openers etc. Used in Y5, so objectives link to Y5 writing curriculum requirements.

A checklist for KS2 children to refer to when reading to develop independence and improve their fluency and comprehension skills. Page 1 prompts children in reading a text as a whole (linked to the Reading Framework 2023), and p2 is reminders about how to answer questions (e.g. in a test). Can be stuck in books or for a display

This knowledge organiser is based on the topic ‘Iron Age’ and supports children writing their own version of a ‘newspaper article’ about children discovering an Iron Age settlement. It is an A4 ‘Publisher’ document and in PDF, which includes Y3/4 spellings, challenging vocabulary, objectives specifically for Y3, grammar prompts, and planning guidance (along with sentence starters for each suggested paragraph).

This writing prompt leads student through the features which will help them to achieve descriptive writing at a deeper level. It is based on the novel ‘Coraline’ by Neil Gaiman, and included sections for the setting, build up, dialogue and the ‘other mother’ character description. For each section, the feature needed to enhance the writing is given, followed by an example. There is then space for them to adapt/innovate their own idea. It worked exceptionally well in my Y6 class, and the writing produced was amazing.
