This topic always opens up useful discussions on what qualifies certain individuals to be printed on English bank notes, and also which kind of people we can expect to see on bank notes in another twenty or thirty years time. However, the strength of this topic lies in the variety of 20th century cultural icons along with the work they are associated with being inevitably studied and explored. For example, most of my students were fascinated to learn about the extraordinary but tragic life of Alan Turing, the WWII Code breaker who is set to be featured on the Fifty Pound note. The great reward I have found students enjoying is the opportunity to include their own cultural icon to include on the back of a new bank note. This resource has been very useful for 14-16 year old SEN students I have taught art to. Art is a welcome subject for those studying towards their end of school English written and oral assessments. This worksheet reinforces the need to understand and show engagement with the topic covered, before awarding them the freedom to express their ideas using this artistic medium. Given the extensive topic of surrealism, this resource is also suited to mainstream high school students who may be requested to show evidence of background understanding of this art style, as preparatory work, before creating a finished piece.

This resource has proven very useful in my SEN school lessons for older students (15-16 years) who are working towards their English functional skills and a place in college. Art is always a welcome addition to the timetable, in between English and Maths lessons and functional skills diagnostics. This worksheet reinforces the need to understand the background of the topic covered and will help towards their final oral and written English assessments. This resource can also be used to teach similar aged students in high school as an introductory worksheet to the art topic of collage, to show evidence of engagement before undertaking extensive artwork in this medium.

There are some creative based AQA accreditations which are ideal for engaging students in academic topics they may find daunting… History in this case. For my SEN students (aged 11-14), this AQA [Ref 106984 MAKING A MODEL OF AN ANCIENT BUILDING] led to a useful couple of lessons which garnered positive engagement when it came to history fact finding online. I would recommend finding a specific history based website for searching information from as student led Google searches often present the required information before a website is even accessed. As a result, you may not acquire quality reading and research time for your students. Also, ensure the students doesn’t get too settled on a building which cannot be categorised as ‘ancient’. Ancient history covers all continents inhabited by humans between 3000BC and AD500. In introduction on the Ancient Wonders of The World with a displayed timeline may help students to visualise the age of a building. I hope this step by step guide proves helpful for completing all criteria on the AQA and indeed other accreditations such as ASDAN History short course challenges.
