Instruments of the Orchestra Music Plan

(0)
A 6 lesson plan initially written for Year 6 but could easily be used for younger year groups. The lessons explore the four main sections of an orchestra (percussion, strings, brass and woodwind), with the children encouraged to do a lot of active listening. Music links are provided, including a link to a free worksheet based on Benjamin Britten’s ‘Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. There are two PowerPoints that I used for the lessons - these were purchased from Twinkl and are still available. However, pictures of different instruments and short sound clips would work just as well (both can easily be found online) - I’ve included links to musical clips so those provided on the PowerPoints are not strictly necessary.

Complete half term English planning for ‘Journey to the River Sea’ by Eva Ibbotson for Year 5 or 6 - a book full of wonderful description and adventure. A great book for developing higher level writing. Planning includes differentiated work and on-going opportunities for assessment. Lesson resources included. This unit of work has been taught many times and has always been enjoyed by the pupils and the teachers who have taught it. I am the English Lead for my school and have always been praised for my clear and detailed planning. I have uploaded flipcharts, using Activinspire. I have also uploaded these flipcharts as a Powerpoint for those who do not have the Activinspire software. Please let me know if any resources are missing.

LKS2 Column Addition & Subtraction

A lesson plan, PowerPoint and differentiated worksheet which teaches the formal method for column addition and subtraction up to 4 digits. Initially used with a Year 4 class but could be adapted and used with Year 3. Pack includes: Adaptable Lesson PowerPoint - Calculations can be easily changed by changing the digits and adding (simply copy and paste) or deleting the place value counters. PowerPoint is designed so that teachers can model the methods and children can practise, before moving onto the activity. Differentiated Worksheet (HA, MA & LA questions) - ignore blank page. I couldn’t get rid of it. Answer sheet Place Value Grid - for pupils to use if they need visual representation (I laminated these so pupils had the choice of using actual place value counters or just drawing the counters with whiteboard pens then rubbing them out). Complete KS2 planning for David Wiesner’s brilliant book - ‘Flotsam’. This book is excellent for developing creative writing opportunities, as well as exploring how authors use pictures to create meaning. There are 3 to 4 weeks of lessons in total which include more than one writing focus, as well as grammar and drama activities, and plenty of opportunities to explore and discuss the text. The planning is easily adaptable for all year groups in KS2 and it would also be suitable for Year 2. I have taught this unit to Years 4, 5 and 6 and the children have always really enjoyed it and it’s produced great writing results from the children, as there’s plenty of opportunities for them to use their imagination. At least one copy of ‘Flotsam’ is needed for this unit; I would also recommend an electronic version.

A great resource for World Book Day or as a mini topic for improving vocabulary and sentence structure - I have used it for both. There are four lessons in total which cover discussing/exploring the text; building up to developing vocabulary and using complex sentences. It is suitable and can be easily adapted (if necessary) for all ages groups in KS2. All lesson resources included.

Complete 'The Magic Box' poetry planning

This is a lovely mini poetry unit of 6 lessons written for KS2 but easily adapatable for KS1, using the wonderful poem, ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright as a stimulus. It can also be used as a whole class performance poetry unit for events such as National Poetry Day. I have taught this unit many times to a range of different age groups and the children have always loved it. It’s also a brilliant unit for developing vocabulary and use of creative language. At the start of the unit, the children explore the language features used by the poet. Then, they move on to writing their own ‘Magic Box’ poem, performing it and then presenting it for display. All the resources for this unit were sourced for free from the internet (some from the TES website) and are easy to find.
