They begin investigating specific questions using diagrams and trial and error and progress to considering algebraic statements using the same methods. To introduce the work and generate ideas we discussed what kind of a boy Henry is and I used photos of different parts of a school/school activities e.g. the canteen/toilets/playground/lining up and asked the children what sort of horrid things Henry could get up to in these situations.

The document contains all the information the children need to answer the question ' How much does it cost to keep a pet dog for 1 year?' The children can record working out on the papers but might need more space! I used this with an able Y6 group but it could be adapted to many dif. groups I think.
