Perfect for BACK TO SCHOOL or GETTING TO KNOW YOU units! These are two social games to help students realize their connections to each other. This game includes 25 game cards, and colored "I Can Connect" cards. Game 1: In a group, one student at a time reads aloud one of the 25 game cards. If the students can relate to what is on the card, they hold up their "I Can Connect" card. Game 2: In a large group, or in smaller groups, students individually share something relating to themselves, such as personal interests. If others in that group can relate they hold up their "I Can Connect" card. Both games are designed to let students see more ways they may connect with their peers, and to encourage discussions in class. Please make sure to rate and leave feedback.

How do we connect youth-in-custody creatively to STEM?

Suitable for 14 to 19-year-olds (secondary and high schools, and college), this article and accompanying activity sheet can be used in the classroom or shared with students online. This resource links to KS4 and KS5 citizenship, sociology and human geography. It can also be used as a careers resource and links to Gatsby Benchmarks: Gatsby Benchmark 2: Learning from career and labour market information Gatsby Benchmark 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers • This teaching resource explains the work of Professor Nalini Nadkarni at the University of Utah in the US. Along with Program Manager Laura George, Nalini runs the STEM Community Alliance Program, which connects scientists to youth-in-custody (YIC). While it is the law that all YIC have access to education, there was no doubt in Nalini’s mind that more needed to be done to give these young people better opportunities. To her, a creative connection to science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) could be the key to a brighter future. • This resource also contains an interview with Nalini and Laura. If you or your students have a question for them, you can submit it online – go to the article using the Futurum link below and scroll to the bottom of the page. Nalini or Laura will reply! • The activity sheet provides ‘talking points’ (based on Bloom’s Taxonomy) to prompt students to reflect on Nalini’s research, and tasks them to research YIC education provision in their area. This resource was first published on Futurum Careers, a free online resource and magazine aimed at encouraging 14-19-year-olds worldwide to pursue careers in science, tech, engineering, maths, medicine (STEM) and social sciences, humanities and the arts for people and the economy (SHAPE). If you like these free resources – or have suggestions for improvements –, please let us know and leave us some feedback. Thank you!

Children's Mental Health Week Art activity

(0)
This resource has been made for you to use during Children’s Mental Health Week (6th - 12th February). The theme for this year is ‘Let’s Connect’. More information about the event can be found at: www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk The aim of this activity is for children to think about the connections that they have with others. when children have healthy connections with others it makes them feel good about themselves and have a sense of belonging. Connections can also be with places, pets and activities. When children lack healthy connections it can lead to feelings of isolation and poor mental health. In this activity children will first think about the connections that they have with others, they will then add colour to the pipes and background and write their connections on different sections of the pipes. The artwork squares can then be cut out and the children can connect their pipes together with the rest of the class -making a lovely display for mental health week and showing the children how they all fit together and connect with each other as a class. Minimal art supplies are needed- just something to colour with and scissors. This resource has been designed for KS2 but it could also be used with other age groups depending on ability.
