Taking on a role is the easiest and most effective way of establishing and embedding co-operative and collaborative group work in the primary classroom. Each child is given a specific role during group work activities which allows them to feel important and valued. You can use the resource to develop the confidence of quieter children in your class, as well as a tool for developing the listening skills of the more dominant children in your class. New school year - getting to know your new pupils

These booklets are colourful, attractive and brilliant to use with your new class in September. The children are able to practise writing their address etc whilst at the same time helping you to get to know them. The pupils have to record previous learning (AFL) - 5/6 things that they achieved in their previous class. They create 'thought showers' and tables to record their likes and dislikes. They are then asked to set themselves targets to achieve by the end of the term and the end of the year. These booklets are then reffered to and completed during the school year.

In my classroom circletime is an essential part of our school day. It takes place every morning and it begins with a checking in activity. Other activities follow and it helps set the tone for the rest of the school day. The success of circletime depends on the setting up of circletime rules which are clearly and brightly displayedon this poster.

AFL Faces for nursery and foundation phase pupils

This resource is used and loved by the teachers in our nursery and Reception classes. The children get to stick a face onto their work/painting/art & craft work etc and then draw either a smiley face or a sad face depending on how they felt about their performance during the task. This is a great way of introducing AFL early on in a child's education and helps them progress to higher level AFL strategies as they move through the school.

I train the pupils in my class to attach one of these self assessment strips to each piece of work that they complete. Each pupil staples the horizontal strip with the three different faces on to every piece of work when they have completed it. The pupils then select the appropriate face and colour it with the appropriate colour depending on whether they have met the success criteria of the task/lesson.
