These nine SATs style assessments are ideal to use after reading each of the nine chapters of the book in guided reading or English. Three animal-related activities where pupils must add punctuation to information texts about three animals: badgers, hedgehogs and spiders. Pupils must read the texts and add the missing punctuation, including the following: • Capital letters for the start of sentences • Capital letters for proper nouns • Full stops • Question marks • Commas in a list • Commas in compound sentences • Commas after fronted adverbials • Apostrophes for possession These tasks are useful when learning about or revising punctuation, including sentence punctuation. The non-chronological report style texts help to familiarise pupils with this non-fiction genre, and the subject matter, animals, is of interest to children. A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration. It is a way of writing that makes something sound bigger, smaller, better, worse, etc than it actually is. Hyperbole is a type of figurative language. An example text demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the Beowulf retelling by Michael Morpurgo plus accompanying resources. The differentiated WAGOLL contains a conversation between Beowulf, his father, Edgetheow, and his uncle, King Hygelac, when he decides to travel to Denmark to kill Grendel. It is based on a part of the story containing no direct speech. Differentiated feature find sheets with answers and word bank are also included. This resource contains the following documents: • Example dialogue texts x3 • Dialogue text feature find sheets x3 • Answer sheets x3 • Contractions word bank Pupils examine the model text, completing the feature find sheet, before writing their own version or continuing the dialogue. The resources can be used when studying Morpurgo’s version of the story Beowulf or a different one, such as Beowulf: A New Telling by Robert Nye or Beowulf by Rob Lloyd Jones.
