Socrative Quiz - C4 Add Sci Ideas in Context 2012

Quiz number for a quick multiple choice quiz useful for lower sets preparing for the 2012 Additional Science Ideas in Context (Dangers and Delights of chlorine and bromine). If you don't know what Socrative is then have a look at this TES page: http://www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storyCode=6193929

Here's an idea from uni I've played with. A colourful powerpoint slide that can be printed off on to A4 to be given to pupils at the start of the new KS3 Year 7 Cells topic. There's a list of keywords, an overview of the topic and diagram they can have a go at labelling plus a space to put their target level. Feedback and ideas welcome. I've got a few more to upload too.

B7 heart valve answer analysis (ICT)

For 2012 OCR 21st Century. Word documents using the 'review&'/&';comments' function to show students what is good and bad about exam answers. The comments can be turned off initially to allow them to discuss (or provided on paper) and then they can be shown the comments. You could also get them to write and analyse each others. This would work better on Google Docs if you can access this in school.

Population and Competition Snakes and Ladders

(1)
Snakes and Ladders game for Year 7 to introduce ideas of factors that affect population numbers. Just download and laminate a snakes and ladders board e.g. from http://www.printableboardgames.net/preview/Snakes_and_Ladders, then students play the game as normal. The only difference is that when they land on a snake or ladder they take a 'snake' or 'ladder' card and read out the cause of their good or bad fortune ie. a reason why their population has increased or decreased. To be honest, I've rushed it a bit so I'm sure someone could adapt it. It could also be adapted for older years; they could come up with their own reasons for population changes.

Animal behaviour (social groups and communication)

Adapted from a Living Links lesson (http://www.living-links.org/resources/materials-for-teachers/measuring-behaviour-lesson-plan/) for use with a low ability year 8 group. Loosely matches the OxBox Science works specification for Topic 4 'Shaping Life&' I do this following a lesson on animals that live in groups and show a variety of videos from the Social behaviour section of http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/adaptations.

Using the correct wording in A Level Biology

**UPDATED** with contributions from @jk_graves. A list of common statements given by students in Biology exams that do not get credit due to incorrect wording (based on my experience from OCR). Get them to try and spot the mistake and then write the correct version. Students always get frustrated because they have the right idea of what the correct answer should be but they do not state exactly as the examiner wants it. Losing 4-5 marks this way can sometimes be a whole grade. Sorry no answers - hopefully you can spot what's wrong!

Scientists Protecting the public revision (OCR A4)

Key ideas match up activity (descriptions with pictures) for lower ability classes. Eg colorimeter, light microscope, chromatography. Could then be followed by the cloze worksheet (answers provided). It doesn't cover everything in A4 in detail but could be useful part of a revision lesson.

OCR AS Biology silent debate on biodiversity

(2)
Relates to specification points : "The factors affecting biodiversity" and "the ecological, economic and aesthetic reasons for maintaining biodiversity" Print off the statements and stick onto centre of large piece of paper. Students move between each piece of paper, adding their comments or questions about each statement - in silence. After a certain amount of time they are then allowed to comment on each other's comments. The teacher could get involved too. For more details search internet for 'silent debate'.

Designed as a review quiz which could be done for homework or in class (on own devices or in an IT room). I have a feeling you can only access and edit if you have a Microsoft account though. Use the image with your QR reader or copy the link below. https://forms.office.com/Pages/ShareFormPage.aspx?id=IazNI3M3LE2SKi9uPOC_9aO57Ce6bztLqdXtYxlk689UQklVRVJCTUU4RTNPRFJFN1o4NUQ2TTRYNS4u&sharetoken=JeRBw7OBsxdsh03T51k3

Some possible questions for the Ideas in Context section on 'Alien Invaders&'. I&';m afraid I've only done it quickly so it&'s not an exhaustive list of Qs. ***NEW - some answers now available on the powerpoint***

KS3 Digestion and nutrition revision cards

Students struggle to revise well so I thought I’d make a template for them to make some revision cards. Not particularly revolutionary but if it saves you a job it’s worth it! Also has some photos of example revision cards on the second page. Print out for them on card (or get them to do it themselves on paper) and they follow the cues at the top of each card to help them revise all the relevant information. Once they’ve done this a couple of times they should then hopefully get better at making their own revision resources.

B7 6 mark questions (New OCR 21st C)

(1)
A few possible questions. I printed these on to A3 paper with the right hand side blank for planning answers e.g. writing keywords and analysis of the question. There is also a poor quality exemplar answer which the students can analyse and try to improve on. Sorry, no mark schemes. Can be done in groups, pairs or individually.

Students research details about the 7 nutrients and a few specific vitamins and minerals. I did it with top set Year 9s doing edexcel iGCSE. The grey boxes don’t need filling in. Answer sheet included.

Powerpoint and hand out for students to fill in about the components of the blood, functions and a bit about blood donation for extension. Originally produced for teaching edexcel iGCSE but fully editable for use with all exam boards. Includes a link to a kahoot quiz.

Have your students learn the structures of the heart in their own time before the lesson so that you can use this time for consolidation, problem solving and other activities. They already know the basics from GCSE and your lesson time is better spent! They’ll need to use https://www.khanacademy.org/science/health-and-medicine/circulatory-system/circulatory-system-introduction/v/meet-the-heart which is also a good opportunity to direct them to this website for their independent learning. Students are directed to watch the videos to answer the questions and then fully label the diagram of the heart. Also included is a lesson activity. You hold on to a diagram of the heart with specific parts coloured in specific colours. Students work through the colouring tasks and then check to see if theirs matches the teacher sheet.
