Revising Macbeth

This unit revises the English GCSE play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. It includes interactive activities revising characterisation, themes and key events, in preparation for the exam and coursework questions. Pupils will become familiar with dramatic techniques, analyse language and imagery and will collect evidence and form judgements on who is to blame for the death of a main character. The unit also includes teachers’ notes with suggestions on how to use each resource.

Apostrophes are used for shortened forms of words or to mark possession. Of the two, the use of apostrophes for contraction is most readily understood. As long as pupils securely grasp the idea that the apostrophe takes the place of a missing letter or letters, they are quick to position it correctly. They should be made aware that contracted forms are more appropriate for speech than for writing.

This lesson explores the features of written instructions including the use of time words to help indicate an order and the use of action words. Pupils have the chance to follow instructions and develop their own. The lesson could be used during a unit of work on writing, especially one that explores writing for purpose. Use of the whiteboard tools (eg pen, highlighter) would also enable the teacher to address other associated word-level work.

This lesson explores the use of syllables in poetry by investigating haiku and cinquain. The activities allow pupils to learn to count syllables, sort poems into the correct order and identify words with different numbers of syllables. The whiteboard activities will encourage whole class/group discussion, collaboration and participation. The lesson could be used during a unit of work on writing poetry.
