GCSE Music – Revision – Sonority (Instrument Recognition)

(2)
Sonority – Instrument Recognition Questions The GCSE Music Specification includes many terms that students need to know, and be able to identify, but which aren’t covered by many of the styles of music studied. Using only music from Popular Music, this revision resource brings together every instrument, voice and ensemble (apart from “basso continuo”, for obvious reasons!) from the sub-menu “Sonority”, ie instruments, voices, and ensembles. In order to be accessible to students who really struggle with such things, there are 50 simple, 1-mark questions, which ask students to identify an instrument, voice type, or ensemble. In addition, there is also a bonus question alongside every simple question, for students who find such things easier – so 100 questions in total! So that the first group of students don’t feel like they’re underachieving, there are two different PDFs: one with just the 50 simple questions, and one with the bonus questions as well, so teachers can choose which to give their students. The questions are in ten sections: Strings Woodwind Brass Percussion Keyboards Rock and Pop Indian Voices Miscellaneous Ensembles The resource comes with a link to FREE audio, running for 1h15’, either as one file or ten separate files: perfect for a revision lesson, or as homework. The extracts cover a wide range of Popular Music, and features music by the likes of Eva Cassidy, Led Zeppelin, Björk, Yes, Primus, Tanita Tikaram, The Meters, Minnie Riperton, Tom Waits, Genesis, Jamiroquai, Badly Drawn Boy, Freak Power, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and The Cure! The bundle includes the full paper and mark scheme, plus two PDFs of questions (50, or 100), and mark scheme separately, in case you want to set it remotely. Eduqas A Level Music - Jazz - Cool Jazz Practice Tests [2022]

EDUQAS A LEVEL MUSIC - JAZZ: COOL JAZZ PRACTICE LISTENING TESTS On 7th February 2022, it was announced that students studying AoS D: Jazz would be tested on Bebop and Cool Jazz. The term ‘Cool Jazz’ covers a wide range of music, and there is plenty that can be asked of students, but surprisingly few good quality resources. As a Jazz nerd (and BBC Radio 2 and 3 Jazz producer), as well as classroom teacher, I’m pleased to present these sample questions, focussing on Cool Jazz, using recordings by: The Modern Jazz Quartet Miles Davis Frank Rosolino Sextet Chet Baker Art Blakey Lambert, Hendricks and Ross There are three sample Question 5s, and two sample Question 6s (comparison between two recordings), including a vocal question. The document comes complete with: YouTube links with exact timings for all musical examples Full and detailed mark scheme Please look out for my other Jazz resources, including “Ten Sample Assessments” and “Ten MORE Sample Assessments”, covering all the areas of Jazz in the specification, plus the sample Bebop Questions. Thank you! This resource was updated on 4th May 2022.

GCSE Music - Practice Dictation Questions

GCSE Music - Practice Dictation Questions

(1)
EIGHT PRACTICE DICTATION QUESTIONS These dictation tests provide authentic examples of the dictation questions found in GCSE Music exams. They cover various styles and genres of music: Orchestral and Choral Music Jazz and Popular Song Film Music Pop music (ballads) The questions come in groups of four, one for each of the categories above, and each group of four features music by musicians whose names begin with the same letter. In this pack, the musicians’ names begin with the letters A and B. The main feature of all these shorter questions is dictation, to help students practice this type of exam question, worth five marks. I have added a few additional shorter questions, totalling three additional marks, so that every question is worth eight marks. As these are shorter questions, to focus on dictation, the extracts are shorter (generally 20–25 seconds long), and there is less time after the question for students to complete their answers. Each listening test is approx. 5’30"-6’00" long. This pack contains one document with questions and answers, and separate documents for just the questions (incl. YouTube links), and just the answers, in case teachers want to set the exercises as homework. The document comes complete with: • YouTube links with exact timings for all musical examples • Full mark scheme • Perfect for printing on double-sided A3 sheets. NB These questions are also released as “GCSE Music Dictation Practice Tests [Eduqas]”, as they were originally written with a focus on the Eduqas syllabus.
