This outstanding lesson on slave resistance looks at the different ways in which Black people resisted slavery. It also tries to answer the difficult question about way some people did not try and run away by contextualizing the learning by looking at the experiences of former veterans and prisoners who have struggled to cope with adjusting to an unstructured life of freedom. Unlike other resources on this topic, this lesson also looks at the contrasting experiences of black people in the USA, Jamaica and Haiti and how they had to adjust the way in which they resisted slavery to suit the problems the different challenges they faced. Finally, this lesson poses the question, how successful was slave resistance and links it’s importance to the abolition debate. This fun and interactive card sort has been designed a starter or plenary to a lesson on the highwayman Dick Turpin for KS2 or a special needs class at KS3. Students are given a series of statements about his actions and how people have reacted to them and are instructed to sort them under the headings of hero or villain. This lesson is suitable for either a KS3 or KS4 history or an English lesson. When you purchase this lesson you will be able to download a 10 slide PowerPoint that has been designed to help facilitate the card sort. It contains aims, objectives, a brief introduction, a historical source, link to a video clip, tasks, activities, starters, plenaries and templates. This issue of abortion is a controversial subject, which has to be handled with sensitivity. On the one side we have pro choice who advocate abortion as key to women achieving equality with men, whilst on the other we have pro life who argue that far from helping women achieve equality it actually allows society to continue to ignore the issues that face women such as equal pay, childcare and promotion on merit. This outstanding resources has been tried and tested in the classroom over many years and aims to help students understand some of the main arguments for and against abortion. It can be used as a starter, plenary or main activity to accompany any main stream text book or resource on this topic. The nature of the task means that it appeals to the full range of ability. The main activity involves getting students to cut out the cards in lesson, organize them into their most persuasive order under the two main headings and then sick them into their books. Once students have fed back their results to a class discussion, they can then have a go at the extended writing activity. Alternatively, they can create a key and then sort through the cards and then stick the sheet into their book or you could cut out the cards and place them into an envelope for them to sort prior to a discussion on the topic. This is a great resource that can be easily adapted to suit your classroom and expectations. American West: The Gold Rush

These outstanding resources has been a labour of love on what I have often felt is a truly fascinating turning point in history, the Gold Rush 1848 - 1850s. I have spared no expense in time and effort in trying to produce what I feel is a world class resource. However, don’t take my word for it and check it out for yourself and see what you think. It forms a series of resources that I have written for my students on the American West. When you purchase this resource you will be supplied with a PowerPoint and an accompanying card sort on the consequences of the gold rush for different groups living in the American West. The PowerPoint contains the aims and objectives as well as six activities, including a snowballing starter of the key words, a source based analysis question on the short term consequences, a source annotation exercise, two thinking skills graphic organisers that try students to explain the importance of each stage of the gold rush as well as come to an overall conclusion on the negative and positive consequences for different groups living in the American West. I have also included an exam style question with a pupil mark scheme to help students structure a balanced answer. The card sort includes statements on the impact of the gold rush on different groups in western society, law and order, the economy and expansion of the US. Additional tasks get students to review which consequences were positive or negative for different groups. This should be used alongside the PowerPoint. This great interactive activity has been designed as a consolidation or revision activity with GCSE or A Level Students studying the digestive system. It is aimed at middle to higher ability students, although with support it could be used with KS3 or lower ability students. The card sort can be used in a number of different ways, but I generally get my students to at first cut out or colour code the heading cards and then sort the matching information cards on the digestive system. They then share their answers and we briefly review their answers at this stage. In the next stage of the lesson, I then ask them then organise the information into the correct columns in their books to show how the digestive system works. If necessary we might again review their answers before we stick the cards down. Finally, I then ask them to create and produce their own revision flash cards using the information from the card sort and the main class text book. This outstanding lesson has been refined and field tested by experienced teachers. It is designed to help students assess which factors played a crucial role in the collapse of the Roman Empire. This resource is suitable for the full ability range and is a great way of rounding of a course with a fun and engaging activity which can be used as the focus for an assessment or extended piece of writing. The lesson opens with either a snowballing or buzz and go starter. It then sets the scene for the decline of the Empire and looks at the roles played by internal civil wars, climate change, inflation, declining population, the Roman Army and the Barbarian invasions, in it’s final collapse. This great little resource can be used as a starter or plenary for an outstanding lesson on the impact of the Great Fire of London in 1666. The resource includes two heading cards which state: 'Positive / Good Changes' and 'Negative / Bad Changes' and an additional twelve information cards on the impact of the Great Fire of London. Students are instructed to cut out the statements and sort them under the two headings. This task is suitable for a change of abilities and shouldn't take more than 10 to 15 minutes for a class to cut, organise and self / peer assess. I've included an extension task, which could also be set as a homework: Sometimes, positive or good changes can come out of terrible disasters. In 1665, the Great Plague killed 80,0000 people. Write a paragraph explaining whether or not the Great Fire of London in 1666, did more good than bad? This outstanding resource which I have used many times over the past 25 years in one shape or another during lesson observations with Ofsted and or LEA advisors. It forms part of a series that I have uploaded to the TES on the Transport Revolution 1750 - 1900. This particular resources focus on the birth of the railways up to the period known as 'Railway Mania' in the 1850s. The PowerPoint includes aims, objectives, starters and three activities that are accessible to a wide spectrum of learners. These activities include a snowballing starter of the key words, a heads and tails activity as well as a thinking skills review triangle activity on what were the most important steps / inventions to the birth of the railways. The PowerPoint also contains a number of linked in video clips and animated steam engines. I would like to add that I am not a train spotter, but I've always found that my students, especially the boys have thoroughly enjoyed this topic so put the fun back into the industrial revolution by looking a few machines rather than just focusing on social history. This highly adaptable revision guide with a past paper question and assessment for learning pupil mark scheme is must have for anyone studying the causes of the Second World War. The first page includes all the key facts students need to know about German rearmament and why Britain and France failed to stop Germany. The second page includes two activities, a summary table why Germany was able to rearm 1933 - 1939 and a discussion / extended writing activity which aims to assess how successful was Germany’s attempts to rearm in comparison to the rest of the world by 1939. The third page includes an optional Oxford and Cambridge Exam Board source based question on why the disarmament conference failed, whilst page four contains the pupil mark scheme and writing frame for the question. This fun and interactive lesson looks at the different role played by women in medieval society from Nicola de la Haie’s defence of Lincoln Castle to the many forgotten stories of women working in hospitals or as apprentices in medieval towns. This important lesson focuses on trying to challenge the traditional interpretation of medieval women as primarily as caregivers responsible for their families. Instead, it explores how these women asserted themselves, gained influence, and exercised agency in various aspects of medieval life. Once the gather and share has been completed, students can feedback their results to a class discussion or mark and improve their answers using the heads and tails activity we especially created to provide extra support. You can then choose to follow up with one of the many additional tasks that we have included, including writing an extended answer to the question: ‘Medieval women spent the majority of their time caring for their families.’ How far do you agree with this statement? ’When giving feedback to A Level Students studying history it is important to be specific about what the student did well and where they need improvement. Is crucial to point out specific examples and illustrate your points by linking them to the assessment objectives.' It can be difficult to maintain a work life balance when you have a pile of A Level essays to mark. If you like me find yourself annotating work and writing your own mini essay in response to your students work, then the history academy might just have the solution you are looking for. The attached essay and source feedback sheets are designed to help you provide effective next steps feedback and save you time. When you purchase these resources, you will be able to download two feedback mark schemes for Section A and B of the AQA A Level History Syllabus. The first page of both the source and the essay feedback sheets contains a grid which breaks down the assessment objectives for each level. You simply highlight, tick and underline what the student has achieved. By looking at the next level, your students can see what they need to do next in order to improve their work. The second page contains a table with a space for writing a quick summary and then two sections saying ‘areas for praise’ and ‘areas for improvement.’ At the bottom of the page is a section for the students to write their response to your feedback. Both documents have been provided in Word and as a PDF. When completing these sheets, I usually type up my comments or occasionally copy and paste statements into the relevant boxes. I keep a copy saved in the students folder and attach a physical copy to their essay. This lesson is designed as an KS3 introductory module called ‘Invaders and Settlers AD43 - 1066’. It provides a detailed overview of the impact of the Saxon invasion of Britain and addresses key questions such as how do historians find out about the past, where the Saxons invaders or settlers and how multicultural was British society at this time? There is also a focus on the decline and rise again of towns, which is a theme which is returned to in other KS3 modules on medieval towns and industrialisation 1750 - 1900. The tasks and activities included in this module are suitable for the full range of ability at KS3 and are designed as a bridge or transition from KS2.
